> Bike Friendly Business
> Extending the Regional Bike Friendly Family
> Two hallmarks of bike friendliness are lodging located conveniently to bike routes and unique establishments serving local foods. This month, we're pleased to welcome two new Bike Friendly Businesses to the region with these distinctions.
>
> Get poised to play. With the dark time of year closing in on available daylight hours for riding, you can maximize your mileage and ride time by staying the night in Troutdale at the Comfort Inn. In the morning, it's like magic. You don't have to get to the Gorge, you're already in it.
>
> Comfort Inn Columbia Gorge Gateway
> Gateway to the Gorge and conveniently located on the quiet north side of I-84 just a half mile from the start of the Historic Columbia River Highway in downtown Troutdale. We're conveniently located for attending a concert on the lawn at McMenamins Edgefield, getting married by the Sandy River, or just looking for a quiet place to retreat at the end of a day. Take an extra day on your time away or working trip, and get out and explore - we'll keep you fueled with a great (yes, of course free) hot breakfast every day! Early breakfast served if your biking plans are better suited to early departure, and bikes are welcome in your room.
>
> Pumpkin is the local food of choice this month, cultivated and baked into wholesome yumminess by AntFarm youth in Sandy. Not just a place to delight your tastebuds with a coffee and scone, the AntFarm has a feel-good community service mission too - farm, table, youth.
>
> AntFarm Cafe and Bakery
> AntFarm Cafe and Bakery strives to provide a vibrant space for the promotion of a healthy and happy community. We offer a place to gather and share a delicious treat with friends, a space to hold events, and an environment to encourage communication and cooperation. We serve high-quality, locally roasted coffee from Nossa Familia and loose leaf tea from the Jasmine Pearl. We specialize in delicious homemade food using as many fresh, local and organic ingredients as possible. Including freshly baked, homemade pastries and bread, delicious sandwiches, and unique soups and salads featuring produce from the AntFarm Garden grown by local youth and volunteers.

> Bon Voyage Heidi Beierle
> The Bicycle Tourism Initiative Bids Farewell to Project Coordinator, Heidi Beierle
> Whether on two wheels, participating in conversations throughout the region, or behind the typeface of an email message, Heidi has been a big contributor to the BTI. The BTI has had a number of wins for bicycle tourism in the region since its inception in July 2013 including:
> A regional bicycle tourism strategy and prioritized list of projects
> Growing awareness of the region's bike-friendliness and its more than 30 recognized Bike Friendly Businesses
> Three routes in the region targeted for promotion, and itineraries created for each
> Collaborative opportunities to grow regional events and support new ones
> Monthly newsletters featuring the region and new project web pages with expanded content areas
> While we will miss Heidi, we're comforted to know that her efforts and investment in the region will continue through her involvement in improving transit options and economic development opportunities.
>
> Join the Chamber staff in wishing Heidi the best in her future endeavors.

> Be a Superfan
> The end of October - leaves riot with color and fall from the trees, darkness lengthens, the wet season returns. For many, this isn't exactly an appealing time to ride a bike. For others, this transitional time is exactly why cyclocross exists.

> With lots of cyclocross races happening, we encourage you to get out and join the action. Click here for some suggestions from Bicycling Magazine's Robert Annis on joining the fun at any race.

> Villages of Mt. Hood
> Mt. Hood Express Bus Service Provides Bike Trailers and Extends Routes to Government Camp and Timberline Lodge
> This past summer, the Mt. Hood Express Bus Service extended routes to Government Camp and Timberline Lodge. These buses are now equipped with bike trailers, allowing riders to access the Villages at Mt. Hood, Government Camp and Timberline Lodge from Sandy, OR with their bicycles. The trailers are easily adaptable for skis and snowboards for winter travel to the ski-slopes.
>
> Currently, the Mt. Hood Express is not providing service to the Sandy Ridge Bike Park; however, we hope to encourage a Sandy Ridge drop-off/pick-up for the 2015 summer riding season. We will include a current Mt. Hood Express drop-off/pick-up schedule on the Mt. Hood Bicycle/Pedestrian Coalition website (www.mthoodbikeped.com).
>
>
> Mt. Hood Bicycle/Pedestrian Coalition Website
> The focus of www.mthoodbikeped.com is to promote and educate, as well as outline project goals for the enhancement of bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure and safety for the Villages of Mt. Hood. > The Intertwine
> The Intertwine Alliance - offers a comprehensive trails guide to Portland
> The residents of the Portland-Vancouver area have a fantastic interactive tool to connect them to nature. This website was produced by the Intertwine Alliance, a coalition of citizens and public, private, and nonprofit organizations involved in conservation, public health, trails, parks, conservation education, and active transportation work in the Portland-Vancouver region. The Alliance was formed to help residents connect with trails and nature and live active, healthy lives. Read more and start viewing trails here.

> Bike Safety Initiatives
> Protected bike lanes encourage active transportation
> As cities move to increase levels of bicycling for transportation, many practitioners and advocates have promoted the use of protected bicycle lanes (also known as "cycle tracks" or "protected bikeways") as an important component of the infrastructure for cyclists. Lessons from the Green Lanes: Evaluating Protected Bike Lanes, from the National Institute for Transportation and Communities, finds "consistent evidence that the protected facilities improved the perception of safety for people on bicycles." > USDOT plans pedestrian and bicycle safety initiative
> U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced a new initiative September 10 during the Pro Walk, Pro Bike, Pro Place Conference in Pittsburgh to reduce the growing number of pedestrian and bicyclist injuries and fatalities. The plan is to improve safety through a comprehensive approach that addresses infrastructure safety, education, vehicle safety, and data collection.
>
> The 18-month campaign will begin with road safety assessments conducted by U.S. Department of Transportation field offices in every state, and will produce multiple resources to help communities build streets that are safer for people walking, bicycling, and taking public transportation.
