Rain, Cross Crusade, & Waffles...

Thanks Thom. I get what folks are saying about fairness, but in my view,
starting at the front isn't going to win you anything unless you have the
chops to stay up there, and if that is the case, you probably didn't need
to buy your call-up in the first place. If a generous mid-packer raises
some good money for an awesome non-profit like the BTA or Bike Clark County
and gets to start at the front each week (and probably still finish
mid-pack), that's great!

The Cross Crusade folks know the value and prestige of the call up in their
series, so I'm quite sure this isn't a common opportunity. It's to support
some worthy causes, so go bid on it!

Allow me to copy and paste from the Facebook page.

In mid-August I was hit by a car on my bike commute from Vancouver to
Portland. As a result, I am not able to race this cyclocross season. At the
Bicycle Transportation Alliance Alice Awards I bought a silent auction item
that included a Cross Crusade season pass and a SERIES-LONG CALL UP. My
loss is the gain of you and Bike Clark County, as I'm auctioning this off
to the highest bidder and 100% of the sale price goes to Bike Clark County,
who does excellent things for bikes in Vancouver and Clark County.

The fine folks at the Cross Crusades have given me their blessing to
auction this package, with the call up, and have also graciously added a
Cross Crusade hoodie, two pint glasses and a growler to the package to
sweeten the deal. www.crosscrusade.com/

Is it fair? I dunno. I'm racing to earn my call up. Rather than begrudge
this lovely, very limited fundraiser (which has raised money now not once,
but TWICE), maybe we can all focus on the things we can control and search
for the serenity to accept the things we can't, like flat tires and torn
derailleurs and washing out in gravel corners.

Come on now, call-ups have never been FAIR.
They are awarded to people moving up to that category for the first time (I got that call-up a couple years ago, and didn't think it was fair then), to people who have already upgraded OUT of that category (a sandbagger call-up, as it were), to people who register first (helps to have internet access at your job), to people who buy a season pass (I won't ever do that, after losing a season after a single lap last year), to people who finish in 30th place instead of 31st place.
At least this SINGLE call-up is for a good cause.

People have been buying call-ups (and race wins) since the beginning of
time...

So we can buy season call-up's now? I thought those were to let the folks who are battling for points and overall standings have a fair shot? That seems unfair to me.

Sweet Jesus, it's finally raining. The ground at Alpenrose is softening and
now you're REALLY jonesing for that coveted season opener call-up. Sure,
you've been choking down dust from your sub-optimal race position this
early season. Maybe you haven't settled in and got comfortable in your pain
cave yet. You're probably worried about getting to the right races that
still remain before the Crusade opener next month to earn that coveted
Crusade call up.

Don’t despair. We've got your series pass, series-long call up, lots of
awesome swag, AND FREE WAFFLES. The Cross Crusade package (itemized list
below) is up for bid with 100% of the sale price going to the fine folks at
Bike Clark County. If you've already looked, go look again, because the
package has grown. The auction is here:

www.facebook.com/CrusadeBCCBenefit

Bidding ends at 5:00 this Sunday. Don't get beat by that skinny little
roadie in a sprint finish. There are *two free waffles* per race at stake
here. Clydesdales, pay attention. Nobody will judge if you you don't share
with your friends.

1) Crusade season pass,
2) Crusade season-long call up [seriously!],
3) Crusade hoodie,
4) Crusade growler,
5) A pair of Crusade pint glasses,
6) Bike Clark County t-shirt that gets you free stuff at local businesses
around Vancouver,
7) A Camas Bike & Sport hoodie,
8) Two CycloSportif waffles and two drinks at each race.

Thanks for bidding!
