Singlespeed Question

Thanks all.
I received more advice than I can wrap this small brain around, but it was all helpful and heartfelt. Thanks again! As one person stated “Good to see you coming over to the Dark Side”.
For what it is worth (not saying this is the best or worst choice), I have decided to use a 9 spd chain as I have three of them. So if you see me racing the SS, cussing (not in public of course...but you might suspect from my behavior) because I have dropped a chain, (and you suggested some other chain) ....feel free to call me a fool, laugh loudly, offer public humiliation or just say I told you so as you ride by my desperate attempt to correct my flawed existence.
Rock on OBRA!

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Singlespeed Question

I am setting up a bike single speed and have a “Narrow-Wide” chain ring. Info says it can be used with 9, 10 or 11 spd. chain. I will be using surly cogs on hub. In the past I have not used the narrow-wide chain ring with the surly cogs. I used an 8 spd chain which is supposed to be too loose on the narrow-wide.
So my question to you SSers is which chain to use............9 or 10? I do not have an 11 so it will be one of those two.
Any info will help. I guess just reply to me and if anyone else wants pro info I receive, I will share.
Thanks,
ron s.

8 speed chains work just fine on the narrow-wide rings when using them on singlespeeds. That is the setup I have on my Kona Jake right now. Using an 8 speed chain in a geared single-ring setup does not work as well as the tooth configuration does not help as much to keep the chain from popping off since the 8 speed chain is wider.

Road chains are laterally flexible because they are supposed to come off when you shift and they need to run at a chain angle. It won't matter that the chain is wider than the cogs and rings.

Fattest chain possible. With the increase in gears comes the decrease
in side plate width and an increase in the tendancy to stretch
prematurely. 9.

Why would you use a narrow-wide chainring on a SS? There's already enough
tension to keep the chain on, right?

You should use the 9spd chain.
