Clearly Portland is known for it's commuter and lifestyle cycling scene, but I'm wondering how the racing is. I raced my first season in Minneapolis last, and quite enjoyed it, but I felt like there were really only about 15 races, or less, in a rather short season.

How much racing is available? I'm currently only a road racer, but might get into cross, though mostly as a farce. What do they consist of; criterium, road race, circuits? Are most of them within an hour, maybe 2? I am generally against driving to ride, but I can make some sacrifices for racing.

Are teams and clubs plentiful? I was part of a club that was only about a quarter racers in the past, and I liked that they were serious when they're racing, but easygoing about results attitude. I'd likely look for something similar,

How is the rain? During the winter, do you still get out for training rides? Do any teams? I have visions in my head of it being miserable to continue to train outdoors, but I'm currently in Juneau, Alaska, so that's probably skewing my perspective. Off topic; can anyone comment on rock climbing, both outdoor and gym in and around Portland?

Thanks for any help you can provide! If anyone wants to expand the conversation to more about Portland in general (culture, jobs, housing) I would really appreciate it but it might be better done as a private message.
