Subject: [OBRA Chat] City of Portland Budget Hearing

Remember how our “huge number of voices” got Parks to request $350,000 to develop a Mountain Bike Master Plan for the City? Well. The entire City Council is now taking Public input (info. below). This is another chance for us to support off road riding “in person this time”. This has a real chance of being included in the budget. Consistent positive input by so many of us continues to show the Council there is a very large, well organized group who want to have our recreational needs met by the City to which we pay taxes. The Riverside reversal by Commissioners Fish and Fritz took even other Council members by surprise. Lets keep the pressure on for the City to provide for the large population of off road riders. Families want places to recreate and enjoy nature right here.

Those of you with children who like to ride, race cross or mtb... think about making a meeting like this a learning lesson for both kids........and the elected officials who see and hear them talk about how much they like to ride off road. Yes our time is precious, but every person who can come lend a positive voice (even to the person next to you) can make this a more equitable place for us and those who follow.

If you cannot make this Hearing, there will be two more.....May 7th (location tbd) and May 20th (City Hall Council Chambers).

I know you want to train tomorrow evening, but getting this Master Plan going is worth your time. Imagine a “Real Designated Cyclocross Venue” developed where not only could we practice, but promoters could put on top notch races (and not worry about the muddy tree roots....sorry Austin). This step is needed to work toward that and more. This and much more is possible. Many people have been working hard, but we need to show those in power it is not just 50 to 300 folks who might want to ride bikes..........there are thousands of us. Keep the faith people and thanks for doing what you can.

ron strasser....obra racer, bike rider and true lover of the natural environment.

Thursday, April 16th, 6:30 pm-8:30 pm - Community Budget Forum
Residents will be provided with the opportunity to offer testimony before City Council.
Most testimony will be by lottery system.
