BATTENKILLED BY USAC

Baker City, like all OBRA races, benefits from the considerably lower costs
charged by OBRA compared to USAC. I don't have the data for them but I know
that the savings for the Alpenrose Challenge are on the order of 10% of the
budget for the event.

To address the specific items in the article:
Pass an online exam - Not under OBRA
Pay for a Race Director license ($150) - Not under OBRA
Pay for the number of officials USAC says is needed and pay their travel
expenses - OBRA officials fees can be significantly less
Pay a $75 fee to sanction a small event - Not under OBRA
Or pay a percentage of the prize money for a large event - Not under OBRA
Pay $3.60 per rider for insurance - $1.25 for OBRA
Pay $500 for additional insurance coverage to use a NY State Road (which is
almost unavoidable for most races) - Not under OBRA
Ensure all riders have a year license ($70) - $25 for OBRA
Or charge riders for one-day licenses ($15) - $5 for OBRA
Pay for each town, state, and sponsor to be insured ($10 ea.) - Not under
OBRA
Pay to hold a kids fun race ($25) - Not under OBRA

Having previously lived in update NY and raced the 'kill five or six times,
I can say it is a great race. I also remember first racing in 2006 and I
think it was about $35 to enter.
The entry fee is now $95 and as of last year they got rid of all the prize
money in the category races.
With 2500 racers at $95 each, I can't really see how the promoter is not
making a killing (even with USAC fees), when you have awesome races like
Baker City putting on four stages for $90 if you pre-register.
All I'm saying is rage against USAC all you want, but if you believe that
Battenkill is on the verge of going under and/or that it is because of USAC,
it doesn't add up.

Interesting read. Perhaps OBRA would like to assist this promoter... Battenkill is a fantastic event.
