Incident on SW Aebischer this afternoon

Eric Aldinger

2016-04-18

As unpleasant as it is, I have started pulling over on country roads to let
cars pass me. It has reduced aggro driving a lot for me and prevents
drivers from making unsafe passes into blind turns.

Martin,
First I am glad you are good to go for the next ride.
This might be a good time for an attorney to chime in on this. I know there
are real jerks (who have done and will do harm to cyclists), but growing up
out in an agricultural region, I know that everyone pretty much worked
around slow moving tractors, trucks, wide loads moving from one field to
another etc. For the most part I am sure that patience with these vehicles
/ operators is still the case out there. Most of those operators are
thankful for the help. I am not sure this fellow exists in that reality. I
am not sure of the law and this for sure does not excuse what this jerk did
to you, but the actual law (if there is one about this) would be interesting
to know.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] Incident on SW Aebischer this afternoon

I would like to see if someone else had a similar incident on Chehalem
mountain recently.

I was riding up Aebischer coming from Lebau/Edy and almost got run over by
and an overweight, white male with some beard in a white big pickup truck (I
want to say Ford F250/350 or similar size Chevy) hauling a really wide
agricultural attachment (tiller? Green with yellow lettering, John Deere?)
which extended roughly 4 feet on either side of the truck. The guy came up
from behind me, honked several times, then pulled alongside me, called me
names, came closer and closer and told me he would run me over if I did not
get off the road (he literally said "get off the road or I run you over").
First I got only irritated and held my line, thinking its the usual imbecile
that we all have met on a road at one point in time. Then I realized what
was behind my rear wheel (recall the thing that extended laterally), scary.
I feel that if I had made any mistake or tipped my brakes, I would have been
under the thing. I hopped off the road and he accelerated past me. Back on
the road, I followed the guy - he was not driving that fast. He had no
problem avoiding an oncoming car about 300 yards further down the road. Then
he pulled into the farm property that sits on the right side on top of
Aebischer where the street connects with Kruger. At that time he may have
gained 30 secs on me. That guy felt comfortable threatening my well being
for 30 secs! Crazy. He could have just followed my pace and he should have
been fine.
I called 911, and the police would not even want to show up. Told me they
would not do anything anyway as they did not see the incident. I asked them
to talk to the guy, but nope. Amazing, makes me realize that we have no
protection out there whatsoever...
Since the driver is obviously a local it would not surprise me if this had
happened before. Please contact me if you had a similar experience in that
area. I will file a civil complaint (hope that is the right terminology) -
that was the best advice the police was giving me over the phone.

Actually it is. In OR they call it menacing, it's a misdemeanor.

No, I don't think it is. Call the police and tell them someone
threatened to kill you. They will ask if they actually did anything and
suggest you get a restraining order.

Be careful out their Martin! I had a similar incident off Tile Flat...no trailer, but big white truck with an idiot in it.

On a side note, but pertaining to idiot drivers. When I ride through the Scholls/Roy Rogers intersection where they are doing all the road work for the new school, the ladies holding the stop signs and directing traffic ALL say it's the worst job they have ever had! They say the drivers harass them all the time, even getting out of their cars, walking up to them screaming and threatening them near physically for the delays.

We're talking a couple of ladies in their sixties...what is the matter with people!

Folks, the police are not going to protect you. You have to do that
yourself. If somebody gets hurt, the police will come out and write it
down. Kind of like a historian that writes stuff down which has already
happened.
I have nothing against police. I think they do a tough and necessary
job. Just don't count on them to help you if nothing happened beyond
words and threats.

I would like to see if someone else had a similar incident on Chehalem mountain recently.

I was riding up Aebischer coming from Lebau/Edy and almost got run over by and an overweight, white male with some beard in a white big pickup truck (I want to say Ford F250/350 or similar size Chevy) hauling a really wide agricultural attachment (tiller? Green with yellow lettering, John Deere?) which extended roughly 4 feet on either side of the truck. The guy came up from behind me, honked several times, then pulled alongside me, called me names, came closer and closer and told me he would run me over if I did not get off the road (he literally said "get off the road or I run you over"). First I got only irritated and held my line, thinking its the usual imbecile that we all have met on a road at one point in time. Then I realized what was behind my rear wheel (recall the thing that extended laterally), scary. I feel that if I had made any mistake or tipped my brakes, I would have been under the thing. I hopped off the road and he accelerated past me. Back on the road, I followed the guy - he was not driving that fast. He had no problem avoiding an oncoming car about 300 yards further down the road. Then he pulled into the farm property that sits on the right side on top of Aebischer where the street connects with Kruger. At that time he may have gained 30 secs on me. That guy felt comfortable threatening my well being for 30 secs! Crazy. He could have just followed my pace and he should have been fine.
I called 911, and the police would not even want to show up. Told me they would not do anything anyway as they did not see the incident. I asked them to talk to the guy, but nope. Amazing, makes me realize that we have no protection out there whatsoever...
Since the driver is obviously a local it would not surprise me if this had happened before. Please contact me if you had a similar experience in that area. I will file a civil complaint (hope that is the right terminology) - that was the best advice the police was giving me over the phone.
