Subject: [OBRA Chat] Skibowl XC course details and more

OBRA racers: Here's more information about the Ski Bowl XC this Saturday June 11! There's a fully updated course description, too! Thanks in advance for reading, and thanks for your patience, too.

The most fun news is this: the Ski Bowl XC is expected to see the return of Spencer Paxson, Barry Wicks, Ryan Trebon, Sean Babcock, and yours truly ---and others--to XC racing at Ski Bowl. Many of Oregon's top pro and elite amateur mountain bike racers cut their teeth on Petr Kakes' real mountain bike race courses. The list of course includes Carl Decker, Paul Thomasberg, and Steve Larsen--just to name a few more!

Preregistration can be done online at obra.org until noon FridayJune 10--that's tomorrow! Cost is $40 but includes a post-race meal. Juniors race for $10 and get the food, too. (I get their beer, assuming there's beer.) Day-of registration is also $40, but the food will cost extra. We hope for a proper kid's race next year, but we could only do so much this time. We also can't control the weather!

Feel free to pre-ride some or all of the course on Friday. However, keep in mind that it's pay-to-play at Ski Bowl. We recommend purchasing the new "Enduro Pass"--it's an annual pass to ride at Ski Bowl all year long without using the lifts, and it's just $30. I got one. (Next year, we'd like to include Friday pre-riding as part of the registration cost.)

The race course routes and descriptions are as follows: Cat. 1 & Elite will do one short lap and two standard laps; Cat. 2, one short and one standard lap; and Cat. 3, one short lap.

The standard lap is basically the 6 Hours of Ski Bowl course but with two major exceptions. After we start out of the parking lot and ride "Summit Trail", we connect right onto "Lake Road" and go back toward Ski Bowl West. We then connect left onto "South Tr" and to Cascade Crossing. (At 6 Hours, we just take Summit Trail to Cascade Crossing.) We then race the Multorpor Mountain loop clockwise! (That's "Cascade Crossing Tr" past Multorpor Lodge at Ski Bowl East to "Cross Country Rd", the descents of "Powerline Rd" and "Rhododendron Tr", and the climb out on the "Optimator Tr" back to Cascade Crossing.) After the loop, we make the epic climb of "Low Rd", "High Rd" and "Skyline Rd". At very near the top, we turn left descend the new "Sunrise Tr" all the way down to "G'Nar G'Nar Tr" and, finally, into the finish chute at Ski Bowl West. (Note: Sunrise Tr twice crosses the the climb on our way down! There will be course marshals at these intersections.) I was able to ride the lap in under 70 minutes on a nice day, and I was going at steady- but not race-pace--it's tough but good!

The short lap is the same except we just climb Low Rd and then drop directly into G'Nar G'Nar, cutting out the huge climb of High and Skyline Rds but also the huge descent of Sunrise Tr.

The Ski Bowl Cross Country Race has been absent from the schedule for a long time. We're trying to bring it back and give it a good home on the OBRA calendar! We like this date because the annual Ski Bowl Mountain Man Challenge Enduro Stage Race (www.fattirefarm.com/mountain-man-challenge/) is the next day, so it's a weekend of MTB racing at The Bowl. Plus, an event cancellation opened it up for us. We're just pulling it together, very last minute.

Thanks to Mt. Hood Ski Bowl, Hurricane Racing, the United States Forest Service, Sellwood Cycle Repair and Team S&M for the event. Thanks also for the support of OBRA and Portland Racing. Next up is the 6Hours of Mt. Hood Ski Bowl.

Email me at tonkin@sellwoodcycle.com or call me at 503-348-7211 or 503-233-9392 with questions or concerns.

Thanks again. -Erik Tonkin
