Accident insurance for bike racers

Bike racing is a non covered activity with Adventure Advocates . Riding your bike or training is. But an actual race is not. I went through all this when they changed insurance providers...which is why I also signed up with AFLAC.

Two thumbs up on AFLAC. It paid off in spades when I had a no-fault bike vs car ($120,000+). Its total cash payout more than covered everything I was responsible for re. insurance co-pay, high-deductibles and out of network shenanigans.

I got it to help cover some unrelated dental surgery, too!

It won't save you if you suffer a long-term or permanent disability, but it sure helps.

I'm sure this topic has come up here in the past, but I was wondering if
anyone had any information, or has had any luck in finding a supplemental
accident insurance policy that covers bike racers, and makes financial
sense.

I broke my collarbone last week on a mountain bike ride. Between the medical
bills for the surgery, and the time I will miss from work (I'm a licensed
contractor/carpenter), this little accident could end up costing me close to
10 thousand dollars. It has been a real wake-up call for me in terms of the
risk associated with our sport, and how much my ability to support my family
with my trade relies on my physical health.

I asked my health insurance agent about accident or disability insurance
yesterday and his first reply was that most policies will not accept people
who participate in bike racing.

Anyone out there have any advice in this matter?

I have full sympathy as I have blown through my deductible and max out of
pocket this year after a single fall.

Adventure Advocates is an option. At least in the past OBRA had a
relationship with them. They offer an accident policy. There are other
options. A Google search will lead you to lots of them. I just checked and
found that someone my age, gender, etc. could get $50,000 accident coverage
for about $20/month. For younger people adding an accident policy to a high
deductible health insurance can be an affordable option that will cover
their most likely losses.

I am not so sure about the accuracy of the "most policies will not accept
people who participate in bike racing" statement. One year the agent that
sold me my disability plan told me that the company wanted me to sign a
waiver indicating that they would not cover disability related to bike
racing or skiing. I told him to piss off as that was going to be the most
likely source of any disability. I also pointed out to him that I was
purchasing a lot of insurance from him and that there were other options
that I could go to. Later in the day he called back to say that the company
wasn't going to require the waiver. I think that they just wanted to see if
I was stupid enough to sign it. Most companies will not ask about bike
racing. Motorsport, ultralight flying, skydiving and private aviation are
common exclusions. There are not enough bike racers in the US for this to
appear on most company's radar.

AFLAC. They do not specifically excluded bike racing. I was with Adventure Advocates for many years and now they exclude actual racing. If you crash while training or riding they will cover, but not in an actual race. I actually kept them and added AFLAC ... so now I have both.
