OBRA and USA Cycling together again....

Mike Murray

Actually I would be more in agreement with Matt. Previously USAC upgrades
were done for OBRA riders unofficially. This agreement makes the existing
process official. Beyond that it means not a whole lot.

Some have, yes. But there is more to this than just category upgrades.
Its a level of interaction between the two governing bodies that hasn't
existed formally for years. Hopefully it will continue and OBRA races will
be recognized by USAC for points and upgrades.

I don't think this announcement changes anything. Back in February I was able to get a USAC upgrade based on my OBRA category. I put in a regular upgrade request, provided a link to my OBRA results and category and they made the USAC upgrade no questions asked. I had only done one USAC race in the past 3 years (since I moved to OR) and had not had an active USAC license for two years prior to upgrading and getting a license for one USAC race I planned to do this year (yeah $65 for a license for one race kind of sucked). They have been 'recognizing' them, but you still had to go through and request a formal upgrade to your proper category by providing a race resume. That's what I heard from a few folks that went through the process last year, at least. I'm guessing a formal reciprocity arrangement will make it much easier. There's still the issue of call-up points, etc, but it's better than nothing?

I do wonder how this will help the southern WA folks that race with OBRA. Looking at the Harts in particular, who had to jump through a bunch of hoops with WSBA since they happen to live on the wrong side of the river.

I don't get it. USAC has been recognizing road and CX upgrade points all
along. So unless they are now administrating points to cross placings I
don't see the relevance to this. Will they begin recognizing and applying
points to CX, because that would be HUGE.

So, likely random and targeted (e.g. Cat 1/Cat 2 Road) drug testing at OBRA races as well?

Not that there's anything wrong with that.  Just curious.

Just makes our unofficial arrangement official. No on the CX points for
callups.

I have discussed dual sanctioning with Derek but haven't heard back. We
did that a number of years back with races like Cascade, Hood and USGP.

I guess we'll need to ask Kevin Blair if USAC will now need to deal with CRUSADA
