Marine Drive Path Users: Travel with Caution Near Ongoing Levee Evaluation Work Sites

Trail users will see mud-rotary boring drill rigs operating on the Marine Drive multi-use path between in I-205 and the Gleason Boat Ramp in Portland during daylight hours weekdays from tomorrow, Wednesday, February 8th and Friday, March 3rd.

The path will not be closed, but path users should plan to slow down and carefully pass the heavy machinery when they approach it. Signage will be placed on either end of the work zone to alert path users. People walking dogs must use leashes to keep curious dogs away from the heavy machinery.

Be sure to wave to the drillers, theyre out there for our levee safety!

Many sections of the multi-use path travels directly on top of a federally-constructed levee system. Levee Ready Columbia is conducting geotechnical evaluations of the levee system along the Columbia River to better understand how our areas protective barriers will perform during flood events. Drillers are taking soil samples and our engineers will analyze the composition of the levee segments and model their performance during high water conditions. The work also ensures the levees stay active in federal programs tied to flood insurance and development standards. The levee system reduces the risk of flooding for over 12,000 acres in north and northeast Portland, Fairview, Gresham, and Troutdale.
