Yes, absolutely. Did exactly that on DK last year. Keeping it in a bento box up front is convenient.

In theory, I could plug the Garmin into the battery, stuff it in my pocket and wait until it charges in full, so that is not the issue of having the battery dangle around as I don’t want to stop somewhere and lose time to charge the unit. I tried testing it today, but was not sure if it was really working or not as it was not a long enough test. Thus, I figured if anyone has experience with this, they would be ok sharing their advice.

I've done this before with my 520 when I forgot to charge it before a ride. I saw during the ride it wasn't going to have enough juice so I plugged it into the battery pack I brought as a contingency. Charging does not cause the device to reboot. You can do this "hot" without pausing the device.

Hi Everyone,

For those of you who have done long rides where you have needed to recharge
your Garmin while on the road:

I am doing a LONG race (long for me) in May. 140ish miles, 13K of climbing.
I have a feeling my Garmin 1000 will die during the race at some point. I am
figuring I will be out on course for up to 12 hours (I am shooting for less,
but planning for worse). I would love to make sure my Garmin does not die
and can record the entire event. As such, I am interested in hearing from
those folks who have done long rides and recharged their Garmin along the
way.

I picked up "MyCharge" portable charger that has both a Micro USB cable and
a Lightning cable. The battery is around 3500mAh, so I should be able to
fully charge at least one of the devices and get a partial charge on the
other if I need to go that far.

My question for the Garmin is: Can I recharge my battery during the race
without shutting the unit off and losing the ability to record data? In
theory, I could plug the Garmin into the battery, stuff it in my pocket and
wait until it charges in full, so that is not the issue of having the
battery dangle around as I don't want to stop somewhere and lose time to
charge the unit. I tried testing it today, but was not sure if it was really
working or not as it was not a long enough test. Thus, I figured if anyone
has experience with this, they would be ok sharing their advice.

I appreciate the help.

Sincerely,

Dave
