MONDAY PIR WOMEN'S 1/2/3 PRIZE PURSE

Good support people! So important to respect people like Matthew ( promoters in general) who is taking time out of his day / life to make races happen for you road racers. Yes the sponsors need the support from you as well. Just think about how fast the day goes by, how much you want to get done for yourself....then imagine putting on those races at PIR. If you were the man, it might change your present schedule. Keep those narrow tires rippin’ round PIR folks. I do not know much about other places around the usa, but I cannot imagine there are any better closed courses available from spring through summer. Now if someone wants to come on and explain how fantastic it is in Alabama, Colorado or New Jersey, that is just fine “for them”.....but we are here and PIR is great for you guys and gals.....support it by racing yer bikes and buying local. Bend, Eugene and S. OR support their series with less population. Two days of PIR is quite good here. Yes?

All.

Let's pivot from this point and move forward.

I was raw. I hadn't slept in the many nights prior to Monday PIR. I didn't sleep the night after because I was SO excited about how opening night went. I was hurting for a friend that was hurting himself. I am very exposed on a deep level (emotionally and financially) trying be creative with PIR. My heart is always on my sleeve. I'm from NY (tattoo on my chest to prove it) and my context as a hockey player is to fight back and fight back dirty...(last 2 were a shot at humor btw)

With all that said. Because PIR means so much to me and I truly believe there is awesome stuff here, I dug in and fought back when I felt the situation at hand boiled over. I could have done better and made a smarter choice yesterday (Tuesday). But it's obvious I didn't make that happen. I'll own that. I apologize and I hope for forgiveness from you all. Thanks everyone.

Warm regards,
Matt Barney

Is some benevolent soul trying to incentivize women & saying hey....let's give these hard working women what they deserve? This might in fact be awesome to see that people are recognizing the inequality & trying to do their part to support women? Give us the details please!

I hope we all can support his decision, and that we all choose to decline any Monday PIR prizes that aren't officially related to Monday PIR. Putting on a bike race is hard - we've seen the result of this in the OBRA community many times recently. Sponsorships are difficult to get and just as tough to maintain. Race registrations are declining in OBRA and across the country. This means less visibility for these official sponsors, and ultimately less incentive to provide these sponsorships.

Though well-intentioned, any unofficial sponsors effectively do the opposite of supporting our cycling community. By declining to support races and teams in any official capacity, unofficial sponsors reap the benefit of sponsorship without any actual obligations towards, or investments in, the community. When official sponsors are upset about this, they will eventually back out, and race promoters and team directors have to scramble to find another sponsor willing to step into that difficult situation. With decreased visibility already being a factor, it is unlikely that the sponsor could be replaced with another quality sponsor. No sponsors means no races.

First of all, I want to send out a HUGE thanks to Matt for continuing Monday PIR. There is nothing better than starting off my week with an awesome bike race and venue. Props to him for picking it up and running with it!

Secondly, I wanted to address Matt's statements regarding receiving prize money from non-sponsors. I hope we all can support his decision, and that we all choose to decline any Monday PIR prizes that aren't officially related to Monday PIR. When non-sponsors undermine official sponsors, those official sponsors have even less incentive to continue their support of local races AND local teams. Though well-intentioned, any unofficial sponsors effectively do the opposite of supporting our cycling community. By declining to support races and teams in any official capacity, unofficial sponsors reap the benefit of sponsorship without any actual obligations towards, or investments in, the community. I am all for promoting women's cycling - obviously - and fully intend on promoting women in the sport as best I can. But, I also want to promote cycling as a whole, which includes our race promoters, team directors, and sponsors. Please keep them in mind when coming to the conclusion of whether to accept any outside prize money and in discussing Matt's decision regarding unofficial prize purses.

Best,

Clearly you've got someone in mind. Any reason why you're not addressing it with the individual or entity that's offering the 'unsanctioned' purse, rather than harassing participants on the mailing list? Seems like more incentive to come out and race is a good thing. Why start more drama about it?

-Brad

If any woman that wins a prize purse would like me to accept the money on their behalf I will be more that happy to apply it to any women's race entry fee they can. I cannot race on Monday nights so I cannot be disqualified.
