OBRA Digest, Vol 137, Issue 7

Dear Portland, Municipal, County, State and other legislators & authorities:

Please take some accountability and exercise responsibility for ensuring that the Springwater Corridor pathways and other areas are cleaned up once and for all! I (for one) as a taxpayer, do not prefer for our public areas to be homeless encampments; and I'm calling for an end to the vagrancy and increasingly transient public displays of disrespect and disregard of others and our Community properties.

This most recent occurrence of a cyclist being violently offended (while using the path as the cycling path is intended to be used) is alarming, outrageous, disturbing, maddening, and simply sad! There is a difference between "turning a blind eye" (to the transient epidemic) versus the very frightening possibility that our cycling Community could have lost a dear friend, a well-respected local advocate and a loving father. Vince, I am horrified that this happened; and I will stand up LOUDLY (with others) to speak very openly to legislators to put an end to this transient epidemic in our region.

I want to be very clear (for the record). I have human compassion and sympathy for those who are less fortunate and who struggle with addiction, unemployment, and other behavioral disorders. I wish there were more ways for our tax dollars to help others and provide care, treatment, and housing.

I do not, however, support the current approach to "turn a blind eye" and allow vagrancy and transient camps essentially anywhere and everywhere around our region. Something has to change.

Chris
Ride. Love. Repeat.

Dear Vince: Really, really sorry that this happened to you!
I hope that your injuries are not serious.
(PLEASE go see your doc about that being-knocked-out thing to make sure.)I also hope you will stop kicking yourself for choosing the ride the Springwater.
That's why it was created. For people to ride and walk along.
That it has become a haven for people who would choose to attack you, knock you unconscious and steal your bike is NOT YOUR FAULT. In any way.Until the city, county and state step up to address this issue -- and the multiple issues that feed it -- we will, unfortunately, see more incidents like this.
Heal quickly.

I know I made a poor route choice considering the time of day.... I keep
kicking myself in the @$$ for it.
