I do not fall for the replace BB story at Psyco vs Crossword. There have been many BB repair / replacements (as well as hubs and headsets) as a result of a season of cross racing in general. I will be surprised if we do not have some lakes today at Heron.
If the weather is supportive, water can be a significant part of a cross course. Although.....Crossword was the deepest and had the most current I have experienced. It was a very good course! Lots of sketchy sections to keep us on our game. Remember a course is the same for everybody.

Yes, I’m also disappointed about the low turnout at Crossword! It was a great course today, super challenging, and in my opinion much more interesting than Heron Lakes....
From SW (Multnomah Village, Beaverton, Tigard etc.) Crossword/Canby is practically the same distance as going to Heron! Come on OBRA peeps we need to support the Crossword race!

Good points, Ron. I will just add one thing. I am surprised about the relatively low turnout at Crossword. Folks, I have to tell you that you're really missing an extremely fun course. And it's close to PDX and Salem. Honestly, it's just down the road. Give it a try next year if you've not done it.

I would not like to see participation in road or mtb races decline, but if there were cross like races in the spring close to me, I would be most inclined to take part. But I am only one person.
Over all, I think we have a great cyclocross schedule in which to participate. The scene has evolved with regard to venues and promoters, but even though we have lost some most excellent venues, others have come on line that just rock it. I still have fond memories of so many that we do not race anymore (including Astoria Amory...you folks coming from Bend amaze me!). Many on chat could list courses that they just loved, but some that seem like venues we have done forever really have not been used for that long. Like I said however...they are amazing. Because of the hard work of the promoters, crew sponsors and obra we get these experiences. Just remember that putting on a race takes way more time and hard work than most of us realize. There are people out there in promoter land, volunteer land and obra official land who go way-way beyond giving. Their willingness to give so much cannot be measured. Remember to thank them when you see them at the races.
Yes Ed. I remember the Golf Course venue in south Salem. I think we got to do that two years. I did a major shoulder plant trying to come out of one of the sand traps. It was a great course....not as tough as the old Salem Hospital grounds however. Today at CrossWord I kept thinking about that Jimmy Cliff song.....Many Rivers to Cross.
More water features tomorrow with or without Herons.

Is cyclocross in August even Cyclocross? I like the September 1 window. Maybe make it later in the season when the real mud has arrived!

Side note: Ron, remember the two years we had a CCX race at that golf course in Keizer? That was a really fun course and, in my opinion, the highest and best use for any golf course.

Support is good for races, but some people can only do one race per weekend....and except for “halloween crunch time weekend” coming up, there could have easily been some family adventures taking place yesterday. Of course there was a pumpkin patch right next door to Crossword.....I assume one close to Psycho.

Unless someone wants to put on some cross races in the spring (compete with road and mtb however), it seem there is only the window we have here regarding dates (weekend cross begins in Sept.) or weekday races before that...if they get turnout to be sustainable.

That's a great course, Brad, although I seem to remember a pretty good sized occasional lake at Camp Harlow just before the road crossing.  Was it low tide today?

Yes, it most definitely is CCX.  Just ask anyone who raced at Keizer Rapids.  It was a really fun course and a very well organized race.  A great way to start re-honing skills for the rest of the season.

I agree with Eric. Keep it simple/ start small and include several communities. It does not need to take place at a golf resort....unless of course....they let racers rip through the back 9! Getting the central oregon communities....sisters / redmond / prineville / madras / etc. and of course bend would be good for that area, probably get more interest in the sport as far as participation, sponsorship and agency (city, county, blm). The support juniors get from endurance academy is great, but one of the highlights of this cross season for me, as far as “forward thinking”goes.....was the Rapha Cup getting the group “Cross Curious” involved. Getting kids involved it crucial, but getting all ages involved might be as important. It is not “just” about creating the next national champion but also getting that champions uncle, teacher, co-worker at the pizza shop or someone who stumbles across a race in progress out on the bike. All options (except the nukes) are on the table. Go for it central oregon.

Jeff’s post was from the perspective of a Bend resident who loves to race cyclocross and has few local opportunities. Living in the Portland area, there is no need to travel far to race. Many of us in Bend (a quick look at Alpenrose results showed about 100 bend riders) travel to all Crusade races as well as others, and well understand the burden of travel time and lodging expense. We greatly appreciate the support of those who make the trek over the mountains to join us for the Halloween weekend, and I think most do it for the fun. If it’s too much for you stay home. Can’t be as bad as Bend to Astoria.

Keep in mind, it's reversed during MTN season, so no, I don't feel to bad
for you, sorry. Ever tried driving to Bend from PDX on a Friday afternoon
in the summer?

Get together with others and make it happen. Seems a lot want races, few
willing to do the promoter side of it.

Super bummer that the Brasada race is cancelled. We need more CX races in Bend! I'm growing fatigued from the 5-6 trips to portland every year, which sometimes include snow covered passes, while all the Portland racers get to enjoy a mere 1 weekend of travel to complete the series. I'd whole hardheartedly support a Bend series in October and November, and I'd bet a lot of other Bend racers would as well. We have a good talent pool here in Bend, so I'm confident the racing would be competitive as well. Make it happen TFG and Brad!
