Canby Feature Film (EPIC WATER CROSSINGS) + THANKYOU

Crossword was one I will remember fondly even when dementia has eaten most of my brain. It was a great course and the water was a hoot of a challenge.....my bike is just fine afterward I might add....that is what sealed bearings are designed for. Takes more than one race like that to muck up a CK BB.
Made in Oregon! Just like Crossword, GPCM, Corncross, Psycho, Outlaw and Crusade. Oh by the way...even though it may not be “hip” or whatever you young folks tag your cool hangouts............Horse Brass Pub just celebrated 41 years. Halloween weekend coming.

Canby was truly epic and a great day on the bike. My only disappointment was that I didn't race until just after the course change - yes, the river crossing looked hard but I didn't see anyone who looked like they were hating it. Add it to the "I was there when..." files for Oregon cyclocross.

Thanks to the promoters and sponsors for this great race. Already looking forward to next year.

Hi OBRA,

Thanks to everyone who came out and raced, volunteered, OFFICIATED (seriously thank you OBRA), and made the 2017 Canby CrossWordCX Challenge the most memorable yet. I believe we finally achieved our goal of simulating that epic 1950s English Cyclocross Race video everyone in 2009 watched on repeat. Don't know what I'm talking about? Witness the Pudding River in full force via this video link:

How it went down: So yeah, we had some moisture arrive over night. Friday was nice and sunny and water levels were appropriate. Patrick Reedy, Helen Reedy, Laura Schmitt and Randy built us a nice course. I showed up for some high-fives and drank a beer or two. Overnight, water rose about one foot. Still, everything okay so far.

First races go off. Everyone is laughing about the ankle deep water crossings.
It kept raining…

Now we're in the ladies singlespeed field and Cat 5s. Things are getting interesting… water is rising about an inch a lap at two critical water crossings. Water is at hub level now…

Master 3 and the good 'ole boy fields, water is rising about a foot a lap while the rain persists. We make the call to run the juniors on a shorter course. Mother Nature intervenes, water is now hip deep on the bikes, and we run everyone on a modified, shorter course.

In either case, I am glad everyone had some fun out at Canby. We were down on our attendance record of 400 last year. But still had well over 200 of you all racing in the mud and rain.

We are going to have to make some modifications to make the course more predictable and sustainable( maybe some raised water crossings???).

Big thanks to all of our sponsors who helped immensely on Saturday with a lot of great prizes: Pearl Izumi, Grand Central Bakery, Gigantic Brewing Co., Bortolami's Pizzeria, and Tuite Bicycle Repair. Thanks also to Randy Word and Pat's Acres for making this all possible, and of course ALL OF THE CX PISTOLS WHO ARE THE BEST TEAMMATES IN THE WORLD.

See you at the races, and see you at Canby next year,

Patrick
