Subject: [OBRA Chat] Epic CrossWord CX -- Yes the word Epic was warranted
for the late morning races!
I am really proud of our crew for designing one of our best courses yet at
the famous Pats Acres Racing Complex, and especially with their ability to
quickly adapt to changing conditions (i.e. quickly flooding water crossings)
and reroute a new course half way through the day!
On Friday our river crossings were completely dry. On Saturday morning they
had 3 or 4 inches of standing water perfect, now they were actual river
crossings. By the second race the 4 inches had become at least 6 inches. A
little deep, but still below the bottom bracket and it made for some
exciting racing. Some good old Old School Cross racing! By the time the
Cat 3 Masters hit the course things were getting real! Both of the river
crossings were over a foot deep and even more concerning the water level was
rising noticeably every lap literally about 2 inches every 10 minutes! By
the end of the Cat 3 Masters race it was over their knees, epic and exciting
maybe, but it was becoming too much. This is where our crew really impressed
me. I ran through the mud, up the sand bank climb, jumped into a little John
Deere Gator vehicle. Flying over the bumps through the field, I rushed back
to the start/finish area and told Brian (our chief referee) that we needed
to close off the back island and reroute before the next race started. Our
crew jumped on board and all of us working together as a team rerouted the
course and added a new section to make up for the loss of the island. I want
to thank our awesome crew of Word Racing, Pats Acres, and the CX Pistols
for thinking quick and working hard in tough conditions to keep things
rolling right on schedule.
Also, thank you to our sponsors for an incredible list of prizes (and free
beer!). We had so many goodies that we stacked them up on a large table so
race winners could pick their own prizes! --

Great crew, awesome prizes, a true cross course, this definitely lived up to
what all the racers are saying the best cross race in Oregon!
This was our 7th year and it just keeps getting better every year. Be sure
to put this one on your calendar for next year, this is the one cross race
of the year that you dont want to miss. Thanks again for your support.
