Hi OBRA members,

I am promoting a new bike race down in Bend, Oregon, on June 16th, 2018. The race is called The Best of Both, and the course includes a 62-mile road section, a transition point, and a 23-mile single-track mountain bike course to the finish. Everything starts, transitions, and finishes at the Wanoga snowpack on the Cascade Lakes Highway in Bend - where there will also be a 10 Barrel mini pub and an event village with sponsors and food trucks. The event is inspired by some Crit and Enduro races I was involved in staging for the British Army 10 years ago. Those guys constantly fought and argued about who was the better bike rider - the roadie or the mountain bike rider. Too many unresolved post ride debates over coffee and beers gave me an idea - I thought it would be fun to pitch everybody together in a race that could put a fun angle on trying to answer that question. I never had the chance to make that happen, but here in Bend, where the riding is great, and the PNW racing community is super strong and competitive, what better place to stage this event

The registration is at bike reg - https://www.bikereg.com/the-best-of-both, and we have a discounted rate for sign-ups before March 1st. Pro sign-ups save $15 ( Pay $130 - cost returns to $145 on March 1st) All other categories save $15 ( Pay $115 - cost returns to $130 on March 1st) Team Relay remains at $100 per rider ($200 per team of 2)

My event staging partner is Breakaway Promotions - Chad Sperry and his team. Our sponsors are both national and local.

The course can be seen here; Please be aware that the road course runs clockwise - Its too snowy up there to re-ride it at the moment. Check out the podium jerseys at the foot of the page.

The race is sanctioned by OBRA and has electronic timing over the full distance and for the jersey competitions. The timing data will be available to mobile devices via a link at the park so there a real-time element for spectators.

The entry categories are as follows - You choose where you want to race.

The Men and Women's Pro solo races. Ride the entire course solo - 85 miles in total, and I have an identical prize structure for the Men and Women race.

1st - $1,000. 2nd - $500. 3rd - $250. Also some swag.

We also have a King and Queen of the Mountains and King and Queen of the trails competition with jerseys made by Santini in Italy. The KOM and QOM heads to the highest point over Bachelor. The KOT and QOT takes on the downhill section of Tylers Traverse.

The Team Relay - partner up - bring your friend, colleague, brother, sister, Mom, Dad, girlfriend or boyfriend and split the course. One rider hits the road (62 miles), hands a timing bracelet to their teammate at transition, and the teammate hits the single track course (23 miles) to the finish. The lowest aggregated time wins.

Prizes 3 deep and medals

The Amateur race - Solo. Ride the same course as the pros.

Prizes 3 deep and medals for Men and Women with an identical prize structure for both.

The Heavy Metal Ride - Steel and Aluminum bikes only. Haul some heavy metal over that mountain.

Prizes 3 deep and medals. Free beer at the after party for these guys.

The Challenge Ride - Ride it like a Fondo. Bring your crew and embrace the challenge of finishing this unique course. We have two tech teams and a sweeper on the road for those who need mechanical support or who blow-up and need to bail.
