bikeflights?

Really good question. First, contact your home insurance (or rental
insurance) to see if it is covered while in transit. My guess is no. I use
GEICO. The cover my bike while it is in my possession only. In other words,
they do not cover it while it is in transport. No coverage while the
carrier has the bike and this is true for when an airline has the bike as
well!

Last year I shipped my bike with Bike Flights to Sedona, AZ. I paid for
some extra insurance. Like you said, it jacked the price up. I was really
tempted to just accept the risk and not get the insurance. For some reason,
I cant tell you why, but I feel more secure about ground shipment of my
bike with a carrier like FedEx or UPS. As long as I pack it right it should
not get damaged. The bigger concern would be it gets lost. I think this is
rare but possible. If something were to happen to your bike while in
transit, you would have to go after the carrier. I dont see this scenario
being all that successful.

I dont think there is an easy answer but I hope my input helped you.

Just out of curiosity -- for those that have used Bikeflights, do you
always get the extra insurance for the value of the bike? I'm thinking it's
a dumb idea not to for me since I'd be shipping in a cardboard box... but
man, that really puts the price for sending my bike ahead for a weeks
vacation almost triple what renting there would end up being.

I’ve both shipped and received numerous bikes through Bike Flights, never a problem. As long as the person packing the bike does their job you should be fine.

Also cheaper than going through FedEx or UPS directly, IME. BF offers insurance at an extra charge, but that does get spendy fast.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] bikeflights?

Has anyone shipped their bikes using bikeflights.com?  If so, do you have any comments or opinions you could share?  I am thinking of using their ground ship, but I'm a bit nervous about having by bike bouncing around at the bottom of a pile in a truck for three days, hard case or not.

Any other thoughts about bike shipping besides bikeflights would also be welcome.

Thanks
Ed
