Really good question. First, contact your home insurance (or rental
insurance) to see if it is covered while in transit. My guess is no. I use
GEICO. The cover my bike while it is in my possession only. In other words,
they do not cover it while it is in transport. No coverage while the
carrier has the bike and this is true for when an airline has the bike as
well!
Last year I shipped my bike with Bike Flights to Sedona, AZ. I paid for
some extra insurance. Like you said, it jacked the price up. I was really
tempted to just accept the risk and not get the insurance. For some reason,
I cant tell you why, but I feel more secure about ground shipment of my
bike with a carrier like FedEx or UPS. As long as I pack it right it should
not get damaged. The bigger concern would be it gets lost. I think this is
rare but possible. If something were to happen to your bike while in
transit, you would have to go after the carrier. I dont see this scenario
being all that successful.
