Hillclimb Champs - Cancelled

Erik Voldengen

2018-07-18

Since you asked, I used to put on this hillclimb race. I handed it off to
two promoters, Scott and Ernie, hoping it would keep going between the two
of them. Over the years, I documented every aspect of the race, and
happily provided everything to them. They did a great job keeping it going.

I didn't intend to scorn Scott, but I did ask that he actively find a
replacement promoter, just like I did, because I think this is a really
awesome venue. Like Scott, I put countless hours into promoting this
event, and I would simply like to see it continue.

I have had to cancel this same race before, so I know it sucks for Scott.
I appreciate the work that he's done, as I have expressed to him privately.

Yes, the race is unfortunately cancelled. Some things have come up that do not allow me to put on the race this year. The permitting process is not hard, BUT you have to submit it in October of the year before, so for 2019 it will have to be in before October 31st, 2018. A lot can happen in 9 months. So planning for the what ifs is nearly impossible.

I tried very hard to get someone else to pick up the race, but not a single promoter wanted to take over the race. I am hoping to bring it back in 2019, but if I cannot, it sounds like OBRA is going to try and find another promoter or do it themselves.

First, I would like to thank the promoter for your many years of work putting on this race. It's unfortunate this years event is cancelled, but I understand life happens
Second, Erik please let other members of OBRA know how we can help you as the new promoter of the the 2019 state hill climb. I don't know who you are, but it takes a lot of audacity to publicly call out a promoter to find a replacement for what is probably best characterized as years of public service.

I see promoters take a lot of abuse on this message board, a lot of very entitled people.

Erik -

As it should have been, those conversation were held off-line. I was one of the promoters that was contacted, but due to my commitments for Race Across Oregon - I didn't have the bandwidth. My advice to EVERYONE who has two cents concerning this race, if you want to step up and promote the event, please do so. Contact the OBRA Director and discuss your intentions.

If no one can promote the race, understand it happens. Scott has done a great job for OBRA and we should respect that, plain and simple.

Its ok Erik, given the trends of this board you didnt have to reply all for us to understand the true sense of entitlement of most local amateur bike racers.

Erik,

Thanks for the thoughtful email. Where did I ask other promoters, well
through emails and speaking with Chuck Kenlan. I still have the permit, you
want to try and pull things together by this weekend, you better be ready
to work 16 hours days to contact everyone, make sure you can get everything
you need. I'd be willing to give you all the people's names and phone
numbers.

If you want the race for next year, contact me off list and I can give you
the long list of hoops to jump through, people to call, costs, etc.,
because this garbage is what makes people like me walk away from doing
races. I worked very hard to make the Uphill race at Timberline better,
worked with the Mountain to show I wasn't some lame promoter that would
cause them issues. I worked with all the people at Government Camp and the
rest area to get them to continue to let me and the OBRA community continue
to use things for FREE so I could keep costs down. Seriously, some people
have no idea the depth of communication, cooperation, etc. that it takes.
Maybe you do, but a lot just take it for granted. For far too long
promoters and officials have been taken advantage of, as people always seem
to find something to complain about. How about being thankful that races
still happen, but things do come up in peoples lives that make it
impossible to make the race happen, whatever those may be. I tried very
hard to change things in my world to still make this race happen, but I
just couldn't pull it off, and honestly my family comes first!

Look I'm out money this year, but that isn't what has me frustrated, its
the direct emails to me complaining about it and then emails to the
listserve that serve no purpose at all (yeah, sort of like this defensive
response from me). I tried to lay it out in basic terms why I couldn't put
the race on, but if you want all the details, why not just email me and not
the whole list? Things outside of OBRA don't need to be laid out on the
listserve.

Have a great day!
