Alpenrose Velodrome

I would be good to avoid going to the velodrome tomorrow, especially by car, until after 3PM. It's Easter egg hunt time.

I just pledged $1000 for the velodrome. I am issuing a challenge to all racers to join me in the Kilo Club.

OBRA is a 501(c)3 organization.
Question. Funds are to be donated to (see below) “Portland velodrome Committee” not OBRA. Clarify please as some might donate more if they know it is tax deductible. I also wonder if some paper hardcopy flyers in bikeshops might put it in the public eye even more. Maybe get one of the local TV stations to do segment on the fund drive. Do we have any OBRA members who work in the media business?
In the end, it does not matter to me. The work needs to be done.

It is an expensive proposition- but the Dairy has also been awesome in
terms of letting our equipment stay there.

The goal here is to raise at least $50,000-$60,000.

obra members,
As an obra member my take on this is....
Crusade uses it only once. Blind Date uses it four or five times and
several Cross Clinics are held there............plus people just wanting to
go ride the velodrome or potential cross courses can do so pretty much
anytime.
Maybe most important is the fact obra and the Crusade have a place to store
equipment and use as central operations for an organization that helps
racers statewide....at no cost year after year.
Give it up to help the velodrome and all of obra. It shows Alpenrose we
appreciate their YEARS of support for cycling in Oregon. Broke? Do a bake
sale or sell lemonade on the street corner on a hot summer day or ? Send
the check to the fund master.
I do not race track, but am going to help this take place. It is the right
thing to do. I urge racers in the far reaches of the state to help out as
well. I am sure any amount will be helpful to keeping Alpenrose in the obra
camp. We are all connected. We all benefit from this being a success even
though some of us have no interest in a fixie. Let one upgrade on a bike go
a few months or run one of those tubulars a little longer. obra is a TEAM
and you are one important part.
This is the right time to take care of the needed maintenance of the site.

This winter Stewart Campbell did an excellent job of power washing the
velodrome to remove the old and flaking paint from the surface which was
keeping new paint from adhering. When he got done it gave us an excellent
view of the deteriorating concrete that had been masked by years of layers
of paint. It was obvious that substantial work needed to be done to keep
the velodrome running. In looking at the options we found that destructing
and rebuilding the straights would fix most of the problems and, although
expensive, could be done at a price that was not astronomical. I have
gotten a bid on doing this as well as removing and replacing the apron.
This project will make almost a new velodrome and will keep Alpenrose
running for the next 20-30+ years.

I spoken with the owner at the Dairy and he agrees that this needs to be
done. He has asked that we solicit help from the cycling community to
offset the large cost. This is a very reasonable request as Alpenrose not
only provides us with the velodrome at no cost. They also provide the
storage space for vehicles and equipment that allows OBRA to run its
business at no cost.

When we did the project to redesign and rebuild the transitions in 1998 I
asked members of the bike racing community to make donations. I also asked
that people commit to making a similar donation each year for a total of 5
years. This allowed me to go to the Dairy with a sum of money and a promise
to for continued input.

I am asking that people contact me if they are willing to make donations.
Any amount would be great but it would take many people donating $100 or
more to get this project moving. Let me know if you are willing to make a 5
year commitment. Please direct payment to:

The Alpenrose Dairy has contributed greatly to the success of bike racing
and they have never asked for anything in return. This is an opportunity to
show them how much you appreciate their support.

Following this weekend's festivities I need to get the sponsor signs at the
velodrome taken down and make sure everything is stored away for the winter.
I plan to go to the track at noon on Tuesday 10/4. It would be really great
if a few people could show up to help me take the signs down and carry them
across the track and put them in one of the containers. If we have a few
people we will be able to get this done in a hour or less.

Thanks to Stewart Campbell and a bunch of other volunteers the velodrome is
now safe to ride again. There are still some holes that need to be patched
and more paint scraping will need to be done prior to painting but you can
ride around the track safely. Weather permitting the Wednesday class and
Thursday racing should happen.

Please be aware that we may be at the track patching during the day if you
go there to train. Looking at the weather it looks most likely that we will
do that Wednesday morning, but we could be there any time. If there is a
"CLOSED" sign on the chain at the ladder please don't ride the track as that
means there are wet patches. Tire tracks in fresh patches tend to put me in
a bad mood.

The unusually wet and cold weather has conspired to make it impossible for
us to get to the velodrome to make the needed repairs to the surface prior
to starting racing. Looking at the long range forecast it looks like the
only expected possible dry days before the first scheduled racing session
next Thursday will be Saturday and Sunday. There are 2 things that need to
be done: 1) removal of all the loose paint chips from the riding surface 2)
patching of holes in the racing surface. Normally the patching is done by
me and a few other individuals. I will not available this weekend as I have
to work. I am looking for people that are willing and available and who
have the skills to do these things if the weather allows. Please contact me
and I will try to set it up.

Alpenrose staff tells me PBS will be filming at the Alpenrose property next tuesday, April 19. They would like to film cyclists on the velodrome in the afternoon and the more cyclists, the merrier. Hopefully the track will be dry. Alpenrose Dairy does a lot for OBRA and showing up next tuesday afternoon would help return the favor.

There are going to be kids at Alpenrose all week playing baseball. As
always, it is important to drive through slowly so as not to run over one of
the kids. There was a recent event that prompted this note. Don't worry.
No kids were run over.

Following the cyclocross race this Sunday the velodrome area will need to be
prepared for the winter. All the sponsor signs will need to be taken down
and stored and much of the stuff currently in the buildings will need to be
taken down and put in the containers for storage. This will go quickly if
we can get a bunch of people to show up to help. I am planning on going to
the track at 4:30 PM on this coming Monday, 10/6. Many hands will make
light work so I hope to see some of you there.
