A few thoughts on the First Sprint of the Year...

Great venue - we don't have all that many 'events' with a made-to-order

audience! Of course, the weather was a factor in the HUGE turnout for

this annual ride across town, but I'd like to think that the sprinting

contest at ride's end was somewhat a draw (in addition to the usual

wonderful cider chat with such a gathering of cycling enthusiasts).

Robert added such a great touch - the charity fund-raising. I suggest

that over the coming year we discuss this thing, and decide what we've

got here:

How do we select the riders, etc.?

1) Robert reigns as defending champion...do I get a re-match...?

2) Totally new pair...?

3) Two sets M/F?

4) One sprint or two out of three?

5) Increase the course length by 1/2 block?

6) Some sort of actual prize (or consequence)?

Thanks to Jay, for hosting the New Year's Day Ride...and, hey, he's

pretty fast - how about Jay sprinting ____?

Ride On, David

Great job to both contenders and especially to the people who raised additional

support. Jay and his the Bike Gallery team continue to be big supporters of the

cycling community.

As a bonus to Robert I will send him some famous aromatic french cheese. I heard

he is looking very lean after his intense training for this event and I want to

see him back to his usual form;

Happy New Year and a safe cycling season.

The bets are in and the ride is complete. David Auker and Robert Burney

raised almost $500 for Transition Projects earlier today. Thank you to all

who donated their money for this fun charity sprint.

In a hotly contested street sprint, Robert got the early jump and held his

advantage to the line. Despite Robert's best efforts to set the course and

all the rules in his favor, David engineered the course with almost 150

meters of up hill.

Many people donated cash the day of the event, and others mailed their money

in. (Brad Gebhard is sending money from France). Pictures will be posted

soon for those who want to see the great turn-out. The weather was perfect,

sunny and about 50 degrees.

Jay Graves, the sponsor of the New Year's Day ride also donated money to the

sprint, and said he would like to make the sprint a bigger event in 2002.

This seems a good reason for more old-timers to come out of retirement and

take part.
