As a long time competitor in both cycling and triathlon and also a gym owner
I have followed with some interest the ongoing discussion about weight
training, gym etiquette, etc. There certainly does seem to be some elitism
trickling in from the cycling community. Several of the replies have hit it
on the head. There is not only nothing wrong with lifting weights or
participating in spin classes, but, in fact it is advantagous for those
participants, even if they don't cycle competitively. The news is full of
the problems about childhood and adult obesity, and if a spin class or
weightlifting benefits the health of the participant, then we, as a part of
the population that espouses fitness, should applaud them, not castigate
them.

As far as gym etiquette goes, if a person, man or woman, is hogging a
specific machine or weight set, and if they won't let you work in with them,
a quiet word to the gym manager or owner will quickly solve the matter.
Gyms cater to the mases, not to the elite weightlifter. And that elite
lifter , almost without exception, will be happy to share his/her knowledge
and work with you especially if they find out you are a competitive cyclist.

I admit I haven't been to the gym in a while, although I've spent time doing
all the things we're now pocking fun at. So I guess I have to laugh at
myself too.

I commend anyone that is focused on personal achievement, for whatever
reason, even vanity. So here I am standing and applauding there efforts.

But heck, Lets LAUGH at each other once in while, and remember we are the
ones riding around in skimpy black unidies every weekend.

The only thing that disturbs me on this thread is the image of a bunch of
middle aged naked dudes hanging out in the Mens Lounge.

All of you are amazing. I try so hard to not react to everything you are
saying,
but I end up so pissed off I have to speak up. Its hard for me to understand
that the only way a person can be fit, strong, cool, and even healthy is to
ride a bike. Heaven forbid people having other enjoyment and aspirations
beyond
cycling. So what if a person only works out to have larger muscles or to
look
better. Maybe ask yourselves why you do many things you do. I'm willing to
bet
a lot of your answers are going to be pretty funky.

As for the grunting, its related to something called the Valsalva Maneuver.
This
involves trying to exhale to a closed throat, which builds pressure in the
abdomen. When this pressure is released it generates a grunting type sound.
This is only beneficial in certain types of exercises. I can't speak for all
of
the grunters, but most seem to be doing this correctly.

And the standing around. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends
2-5
minutes of rest between sets for strength training. This is not muscular
endurance or lifting for hypertrophy, this is for pure strength. So resting
up to 5 minutes between sets makes for a lot of standing around.

Also, I'm pretty sure that spin class and riding bikes are two different
things.
I've yet to go to a spin class that is designed for cyclists, they are
designed
to give people power and endurance workouts. I've been criticized in the
past
for doing things too much like a cyclist and not getting the full benefit of
what the instructor is trying to pass on. So there are certainly benefits to
changing your style a bit.

What I'm trying to put across with this message is that people go to the gym
and
do things for different reasons, a lot of reasons that we don't understand.
Isn't that the best part of all of this. So many types of people with so
many
different goals coming to one place to share the activities of the gym.
Maybe
thats why there's so much socializing. It seems like some folks on the list
might be a little too critical of what others are doing. Maybe its time to
be a
little more critical of ourselves.

Hey Curt, the same thing at 24 hour in the pearl....They have an elevator
going up to the second floor with stairs right around the corner and I see
people using the elevator when I am in there....Pretty funny..........
To each his own I guess, I am sure lots of people will come to there
defense,
injuries, handicapped, you don't know there story, etc.... but they are
walking fine all the way to elevator and fully capable of making it up
stairs......Have a great weekend.
Keep your clothes on in the locker room...
Hey Heather, how are those good looking Tedder kids at school doing?

Curt Dewees

2007-02-02

One of the funniest photos I've ever seen shows the front entrance to
a 24-Hour Fitness gym somewhere. The gym entrance is on the second
floor of a two-story complex, and there is an escalator leading up
from the ground floor with flights of stairs on each side of the
escalator.

The photo showed the escalator full of people wearing gym clothes
and/or carrying gym bags, going to and from the gym entrance, and
absolutely NO ONE taking the stairs.

(Apparently, the idea of actually getting any exercise OUTSIDE of the
gym is foreign to a large number of fitness buffs out there.)

I agree with this.

The only thing that really makes me scratch my head is why exercise for
most of us can only be done in a gym? The irony of getting in one's car
to drive to the gym (other than weather excuses, which I also find weak)
to go to the gym or up to the Fairmont Loop to exercise. We would not
have so much obesity if we actually incorporate exercise into our daily,
meaningful routine.

Spoken as an elitist 'cycling commuter' not an elitist cycling
competitor. Frankly most of us compete in vain, we are not being paid
or will we ever do it as a career. I would hate to use the H word.

If someone is in the way at the gym, I let them know I would like to
use the machine. Never been denied yet.

As a long time competitor in both cycling and triathlon and also a gym
owner
I have followed with some interest the ongoing discussion about weight
training, gym etiquette, etc. There certainly does seem to be some
elitism
trickling in from the cycling community. Several of the replies have
hit it
on the head. There is not only nothing wrong with lifting weights or
participating in spin classes, but, in fact it is advantagous for
those
participants, even if they don't cycle competitively. The news is full
of
the problems about childhood and adult obesity, and if a spin class or
weightlifting benefits the health of the participant, then we, as a
part of
the population that espouses fitness, should applaud them, not
castigate
them.

As far as gym etiquette goes, if a person, man or woman, is hogging a
specific machine or weight set, and if they won't let you work in with
them,
a quiet word to the gym manager or owner will quickly solve the
matter.
Gyms cater to the mases, not to the elite weightlifter. And that
elite
lifter , almost without exception, will be happy to share his/her
knowledge
and work with you especially if they find out you are a competitive
cyclist.

OK OK I give.

I admit I haven't been to the gym in a while, although I've spent
time doing
all the things we're now pocking fun at. So I guess I have to laugh at
myself too.

I commend anyone that is focused on personal achievement, for whatever
reason, even vanity. So here I am standing and applauding there
efforts.

All of you are amazing. I try so hard to not react to everything you
are
saying,
but I end up so pissed off I have to speak up. Its hard for me to
understand
that the only way a person can be fit, strong, cool, and even healthy
is to
ride a bike. Heaven forbid people having other enjoyment and
aspirations
beyond
cycling. So what if a person only works out to have larger muscles or
to
look
better. Maybe ask yourselves why you do many things you do. I'm willing
to
bet
a lot of your answers are going to be pretty funky.

As for the grunting, its related to something called the Valsalva
Maneuver.
This
involves trying to exhale to a closed throat, which builds pressure in
the
abdomen. When this pressure is released it generates a grunting type
sound.
This is only beneficial in certain types of exercises. I can't speak
for all
of
the grunters, but most seem to be doing this correctly.

And the standing around. The American College of Sports Medicine
recommends
2-5
minutes of rest between sets for strength training. This is not
muscular
endurance or lifting for hypertrophy, this is for pure strength. So
resting
up to 5 minutes between sets makes for a lot of standing around.

Also, I'm pretty sure that spin class and riding bikes are two
different
things.
I've yet to go to a spin class that is designed for cyclists, they are
designed
to give people power and endurance workouts. I've been criticized in
the
past
for doing things too much like a cyclist and not getting the full
benefit of
what the instructor is trying to pass on. So there are certainly
benefits to
changing your style a bit.

What I'm trying to put across with this message is that people go to
the gym
and
do things for different reasons, a lot of reasons that we don't
understand.
Isn't that the best part of all of this. So many types of people with
so
many
different goals coming to one place to share the activities of the
gym.
Maybe
thats why there's so much socializing. It seems like some folks on the
list
might be a little too critical of what others are doing. Maybe its time
to
be a
little more critical of ourselves.

I am also a regular at the spin classes. It is very convenient and keeps me
out of the weather and dark. The stationary bike allows you to train in the
exact zone that you want to train in. There are no traffic lights to allow
your heart rate to drop. No sudden steep climbs that jack your heartrate
beyond what it is supposed to be. You have absolute control. That said,
this time of year I go in early and warm up and then absolutly kill myself
in the next hour. When I am done I could ring out my shirt and socks and
there is a very large puddle of sweat under the bike. It is a good workout
and who cares that the person next to you barely broke a sweat. their loss
right?

I do spin classes and just flog myself!
I get my HR pretty jacked pedaling to no where. I usually only get to the
puke
point out at Alpenrose but spin classes come close. If you ever want to
indulge
in a spin class be sure you warm up somehow before you start.

Too bad those spin bikes can't show the watts being put out by each bike!
Then we would really see how deep "Spin Bike Barbie" is digging! ;)

Thomas,

This year, for the first time, I purchased a 4 month membership at a gym in
Eugene just for the spin classes. I promised the wife that I would not train
at night and to tell you the truth, it's been flipping cold lately. So most
weekdays I haul my butt out of bed at 4:15 and spin for 30 or 40 minutes by
myself and then take a 60 minute spin class. (I just walk by the muscle
fatties as they are grunting - or lounging - away... pointless)

I don't know about your classes but the gals at Gold's Gym are ruthless
monsters. Outside of a race, I have never consistently worked as hard as I
have when an otherwise pleasant aerobics instructor is screaming in my ear
that I need to 'dig deeper', or 'I thought you were a bike racer?', or 'Is
that all you've got?' Admittedly I turn up the tension more than the typical
spin junkie... Or perhaps I'm just lucky.

And then I end the workout with a 10 minute sauna. Pleasant.

You may judge for yourself the results of a mud and ice free training regime
on the 18th.

It is to bad that so many folks have this attitude about spin class vs

The versatile Valsalva Maneuver. For more than just the morning
constitutional! I just had to look it up on the internet. Awesome. Now I
know a lot more about weight lifting and sexual therapy.

Seriously, thanks for the information. Much appreciated.

OK OK I give.

I admit I haven?t been to the gym in a while, although I've spent time doing
all the things we're now pocking fun at. So I guess I have to laugh at
myself too.

I commend anyone that is focused on personal achievement, for whatever
reason, even vanity. So here I am standing and applauding there efforts.
<

But heck, Lets LAUGH at each other once in while, and remember we are the
ones riding around in skimpy black unidies every weekend.

The only thing that disturbs me on this thread is the image of a bunch of
middle aged naked dudes hanging out in the Mens Lounge.

I think Heather was, perhaps, just complaining about them take over the machine without doing any actual work. If they are taking up a machine and not really using it, then she probably has a right to complain.

To all of you critizing folks for "hanging out" at the gym and not spinning as you would-

Who are you to critize how others spend their time at the gym? Why do you care?
Y'all come off like a bunch of elitist jocks.

If a guy wants to hang with his buddies at the squat rack and grunt like a gorilla, then let him. So they don't ride their bikes to the gym, big deal.
Since the question was asked, "What kind of a society do we live in that people think like this?" I'll answer it: We live in a free society where people are free to do as they damn well please provided it doesn't infringe on the freedoms of others. Woiuld y'll have it that we dictate how others get around and spend their time based solely on how you choose to do so?
Although you may think otherwise, that doesn't make you liberal and progressive. That makes you a fascist - I call it like I see it.

As for assuming that weight lifters are illiterate and are doing nothing simply because their weight lifting is not prep for another sport, such an arrogant attitude says more about you than them. The weight lifters at my gym are good guys and gals, are smart and friendly. How do I know this?
Because I introduced myself to them and got to know them as people and not objects.

Since you haters seem to have never talked to these guys hanging out nude watching tv or however they chooose to spend their time at the gym, it makes you come off like...well, what's that word you call a person when they have judged someone before meeting them?

If the folks at the gym bother you so much, perhaps you should stay home.

Matt Plummer

2007-02-01

All of you are amazing. I try so hard to not react to everything you are saying,
but I end up so pissed off I have to speak up. Its hard for me to understand
that the only way a person can be fit, strong, cool, and even healthy is to
ride a bike. Heaven forbid people having other enjoyment and aspirations beyond
cycling. So what if a person only works out to have larger muscles or to look
better. Maybe ask yourselves why you do many things you do. I'm willing to bet
a lot of your answers are going to be pretty funky.

As for the grunting, its related to something called the Valsalva Maneuver. This
involves trying to exhale to a closed throat, which builds pressure in the
abdomen. When this pressure is released it generates a grunting type sound.
This is only beneficial in certain types of exercises. I can't speak for all of
the grunters, but most seem to be doing this correctly.

And the standing around. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends 2-5
minutes of rest between sets for strength training. This is not muscular
endurance or lifting for hypertrophy, this is for pure strength. So resting
up to 5 minutes between sets makes for a lot of standing around.

Also, I'm pretty sure that spin class and riding bikes are two different things.
I've yet to go to a spin class that is designed for cyclists, they are designed
to give people power and endurance workouts. I've been criticized in the past
for doing things too much like a cyclist and not getting the full benefit of
what the instructor is trying to pass on. So there are certainly benefits to
changing your style a bit.

What I'm trying to put across with this message is that people go to the gym and
do things for different reasons, a lot of reasons that we don't understand.
Isn't that the best part of all of this. So many types of people with so many
different goals coming to one place to share the activities of the gym. Maybe
thats why there's so much socializing. It seems like some folks on the list
might be a little too critical of what others are doing. Maybe its time to be a
little more critical of ourselves.

I went to a spin class at Bally's and the instructor chewed me out after
because I didn't follow his specific instructions as to where to put my
hands. I was using the bars to stretch my back during a cool down section
of the work out.

It was funny because a few months earlier I had sold the guy some shoes. He
had just earned his "SPIN CLASS" teaching certificate. We asked him how
much he rides his bike, I don't think he had one. Or had any interest in
cycling.

It is to bad that so many folks have this attitude about spin class vs
riding outside. If they can do Spin class three days a week, they will
certainly have no problem riding outside. I bet a few of them will be able
put some serious hurt on the rest of us at PIR.
Maybe we should go an a recruiting spree. Help these folks being oppressed
by Corporate Gymnasium free themselves from the persecution of monthly dues,
sweat covered weight benches and mildewed locker rooms.

YES! FREEDOM! THY NAME IS OBRA!!

Losers.

I've always wanted to do this, but never have.
You walk up to someone in the gym and ask them "Hey, what what they are
training for?" I'd bet you 9 out of ten would look at you dumbfounded
because they don't want to admit that it's just vanity (That, and they don't
know what dumbfounded or vanity mean). Then you say, "No, I mean, what sport
do you do that you are lifting weights for? Are you a cyclist, do you play
football or soccer, you know?"

"Uh, I'm just here to lift weights."

"So you don't actually do anything then?"

"Uh, I guess not."

My wife and I started going to spin class last fall when the days got
shorter (boring!). The instructor was complaining because when the Hillsboro
Aquatic Center (which has a pool, weight room and other fitness stuff) was
closed DURING THE SUMMER, he didn't have anywhere to work out. He said he
has a bike that he occasionally rides to the gym, but apparently the thought
of doing something other than driving to the gym to work out was completely
foreign to him. What kind of society do we live in that people think like
this? That is SO WRONG!

OK, that's the end of my Thursday morning rant.

Lounge chairs and tv in the locker rooms......that is why I stopped
going to the Y to work out. There were guys hanging out in the weight
room to look cool and check out the few women that were there. but the
adsurd stuff in the locker room creeped me out of working out. There was
more than a handful of guys that just hung out in the locker room for
hours, watching TV in the nude! There isn't anything wrong with being
nude....but these guys needed to be working out, not just "hanging" out.

Yes. In my club they have a TV and lounge chairs in the locker room.
the
TV is always on and the chairs filled.

Look around, more and more guys are NOT working out. I think more women

ARE.

We are in middle of a crisis. I teach high school and last semester I
had 8
students with 25 percent or less in class. All guys. One day a student
(a
very overweight guy) was more than 60 minutes late. His reason: He fell

asleep at Wendy's after having lunch.

I think it was last summer the Oregonian published an article about how
more
and more women are becoming doctors, lawyers etc. More guys are college

drop outs.

It would be easy to call them LAZY. Really I think it has a lot to do
with
a lack of male influence in the home.

Gack.

Instructors should know a roadie or biker when they see one- unless
they see you doing something completely atrocious like facing the
wrong way on the bike, they shouldn't be telling you where to put
your hands.

Being an instructor I'll tell you doing only spin during the winter
is only good for short interval racing. Even in an hour class you're
likely only getting 20-30 minutes of real cardio. If you aren't
careful you have to be aware that it could mess with your pedal
stroke- especially if you tend to favor one side. That said, I think
the benefits of spin class are great. While you can put in base
miles while riding outside, spin classes are a great way to stress
your anaerobic/high aerobic system. I know there's studies that
actually say some stress is suggested during the winter.

Spin class is also a great place to get converts to cycling.
hehehe. I've convinced more than a few people to pick up bikes. A
couple of them have even dropped running to cycle- and even race!

My brother teaches high school too, he notices the same thing. On average the girls are way outperforming boys. Ok there are always a couple boys that are top of the class, overachievers, but for the most part the girls are doing much better.

There is a reason for it and its not necessarily just the lack of male influence. The reason has been identified for quite a while now, but its not media friendly nor politically correct in the US. Keep in mind the author, Christine Sommers is a feminist but also became the mother of two boys...

http://www.amazon.com/WAR-AGAINST-BOYS-Misguided-Feminism/dp/0684849577/sr=1-1/qid=1170348543/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-2472900-9333762?ie=UTF8&s=books

I read it 6 years ago, its an easy read, and well researched. I think what she says for the most part rings true and should be required reading by all teachers and parents.

Read some of the reviews too..

Evan,

I think I'm the only member that rides to my gym. The guy at the front desk
asked me why I always ride my bike. Why??? (so I?m all warmed-up and ready
to go hard on the Exercycle?)

After talking with him for a while I realized he rode his bike to work due
to the high cost of owning a car.

When I go into the Y in the evening it more strikes me as just another way to go "cruising". I started counting the number of people repeatidly walking by, in the cruise mode, while I was on the treadmill... absolutely amazing. At least they're burning fat instead of gas.

"Uh, I'm just here to lift weights."

"So you don't actually do anything then?"

"Uh, I guess not."

My wife and I started going to spin class last fall when the days got shorter (boring!). The instructor was complaining because when the Hillsboro Aquatic Center (which has a pool, weight room and other fitness stuff) was closed DURING THE SUMMER, he didn't have anywhere to work out. He said he has a bike that he occasionally rides to the gym, but apparently the thought of doing something other than driving to the gym to work out was completely foreign to him. What kind of society do we live in that people think like this? That is SO WRONG!

OK, that's the end of my Thursday morning rant.

WHAT'S WITH ALL THE GUYS (I don't see women doing this) AT THE GYM THAT COME
TO JUST HANG OUT? Seriously, they come in, they hang out and talk to their
buddies, (usually in the way), they LOOK like they might be there to
workout, since they are wearing the approprite workout attire, but they
don't lift a single weight. I mean, you don't just accidentally drop by the
gym to hang out, right? What's up with that?

Does this happen where you work out?

Are you one of THEM?

What should we call THEM?

Losers.

I've always wanted to do this, but never have.
You walk up to someone in the gym and ask them "Hey, what what they are training for?" I'd bet you 9 out of ten would look at you dumbfounded because they don't want to admit that it's just vanity (That, and they don't know what dumbfounded or vanity mean). My question is why do these same guys have to grunt so loud? It sounds like
they are having a painful bowl movement? I mean seriously, a little grunt
is justifiable, but the gut wrenching cries are a bit distracting.

What's a gym?

I think I saw one of those things yesterday afternoon on my ride.
Beautiful sunshine in January and the parking lot was packed full.

I can sorta understand it if it's pouring rain, but even then I'm not
dedicated enough to work out indoors. I think I'd rather go to the
dentist.

I'm pretty much an early morning gym person, there by 5 AM and out of there
by 6:30 (off to work). The guys there at that time are actually working
out. The funniest thing is, there are TVs on, usually showing a bowflex or
ab lounger infomercial and we all chuckle about why we don't look like the
people in those ads, since we're working so darned hard.

Perhaps the "loungers" are more of a later in the day phenom? Maybe TV is
more interesting than it is in the early morning.

Oh fine,
Now make feel guilty about the gym I pay for and haven't been to in year.
At least sitting on the couch watching game shows and re-runs of Grey's
Anatomy doesn't get in the way of all the Hot Women working out a the gym.

Yes. In my club they have a TV and lounge chairs in the locker room. the
TV is always on and the chairs filled.

Look around, more and more guys are NOT working out. I think more women
ARE.

We are in middle of a crisis. I teach high school and last semester I had 8
students with 25 percent or less in class. All guys. One day a student (a
very overweight guy) was more than 60 minutes late. His reason: He fell
asleep at Wendy's after having lunch.

I think it was last summer the Oregonian published an article about how more
and more women are becoming doctors, lawyers etc. More guys are college
drop outs.

It would be easy to call them LAZY. Really I think it has a lot to do with
a lack of male influence in the home.

I have seen this a lot. I think they are just "resting" between "sets." I
believe they further justify their lack of gusto by stating they are just
working out to "maintain," rather than "build."

There's nothing wrong with asking if you can "Squeeze in a set," especially
if you are a girl (I don't believe the gym is completely politically
correct).

In college, as we stretched after our morning weight workouts, we'd joke
about marrying rich women and just hanging out at the gym all day. We'd
wear nice athletic attire and drink expensive athletic drinks. Most of us
would have groupies who'd wait around just to see us do one set of front
squats or something. I think it's really funny you've actually found
someone living the dream.
