Oregon's favorite Spring classic is now less than 3 weeks away. Come
join us on Saturday, April 26th for the Eugene Roubaix. Held just West
of town, this rolling circuit through lush farm country features one
flat, well-groomed gravel section followed by a small "berg" --
perfect breakaway territory for an otherwise flat course.

Pre-registration pricing is only $25 this year ($30 day-of). We'll
have food on-site, provided by Sammitch food cart. And don't miss out
on this year's award ceremony at Oakshire Brewing's new public house
in Eugene's Whitaker District. Oakshire will be pouring a free pint
for each participant (21+)!!

Volunteers race for free. We need your help. Please send us an email
for details (caldwell541@gmail).

Hello Eugene Roubaixers,

Thank you for coming out May 1 to race!

I am interested in hearing feedback about the race. If you have any comments about the course, suggestions for improvements to the day, or absolutely anything else to say, please don't hesitate to EMAIL me. Feedback is helpful. Always.

Thanks to all the volunteers, of course, and the OBRA officials. And, again thanks to the riders!!

The 4th Oregon Cup event of the year, the Eugene Roubaix, is tomorrow, May 1st in west Eugene. We have had a large number of early registrations, but plenty of room in all fields.

One-day and annual race licenses will be available at the race, but purchasing licenses in advance will make race-day registration faster and smoother! Annual licenses are available online at https://obra.org/person_session/new.

Also, we are in need of a few afternoon volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Thanks and see you tomorrow,
David Kuhns

I just wanted to send out a big thanks to everyone that came to the inaugural Eugene Roubaix. We had a great day of racing. Hopefully word will spread and we'll get even more Roubaixers next year.

And it wouldn't have been possible without the great OBRA officials that worked our race, several of whom stepped in to save us at the last minute. Thanks to:

Ted Turner
Jim Fischer
Heather Paris
Brian Vollmer-Buhl
Mike Woods
Steve Scarich

We're lucky to have people like them (including Sal and Candi, of course) so that a crazy idea a bunch of guys had while drinking beer can turn into a safe and successful bike race.

Hello OBRA,

I would like to invite everyone to come down for this race this weekend in Eugene. We'll except for Tonkin because it would be like putting Museeuw on this course. I road the course last night and am excited about the race. It is going to be a lot of fun!

As Ted?s pictures show the 1 mile gravel sections have very small gravel on it. In the thicker spots it might be a little slippery changing lanes but manageable. There are really no potholes, just lumpy hard pack kind of like cross country racing. So the mountain bike riders that are used to uneven cadences will have an advantage for about 1 minute. The rest of course has several small steep rollers and open straight a ways. There is even a brief curvy descent like Europea roads. We are expecting it to be 70 degrees for the race.

Oh I forgot to mention that the finish is right after the gravel section to make things real interesting at the end.

I expect the race to be epic if everyone makes the journey. This will not be a boring flat race. I guarantee it!

Hope to see you there.

Officials Needed:
We currently don?t have enough officials to cover the PM events. We need at least one more. Might any of you freshly trained Eugene-area officials be available? Reply to me at streamrx@comcast.net or ted.turner@weyerhaeuser.com.

Finish Line Camera:
Candi has the Lynx line-scan camera. We need a Portland-area volunteer to arrange a pick-up and then return it to Portland before Tuesday.

The Course:
I used to officiate the Rocky Mountain Roubaix RR (Missoula, MT) many years ago. Deep ruts and washboard conditions were tough on the official?s cars. I drove the Eugene course last weekend to look for potential hazards. The road is well-graded with a ¾-inch minus surface aggregate. Not bad. I wish some of the logging roads I drive every day were surfaced this well! If you?re racing, carry a repair kit anyway.

I took a few pics of the gravel stretch on Cantrell Rd.; they?re posted here: http://www.pbase.com/turnert/roubaix_course

Thanks,
Ted Turner
