You can read all you can about it, but until you are sleep deprived and
remembering to hold the projectile vomiting baby face out. You have
to take the advice, and reviews, with a grain of salt.

I think Ron is way off base on this one. The fact that Scott (I don't know him and haven't met him, by the way) is not at the top of the leader board is not necessarily an indication of the quality of his reviews. What counts for reviews is the amount of time, thoughtfulness, passion for the subject and communication skills, something that the top of leader board may or may not have. Tullio was pro pack fodder for the most part, but he managed to know something about creativity, inventiveness and business savvy. The best baseball managers seem come from the ranks of the guys who had a little more than a cup of coffee with the big show.
And Ron, with all due respect, if that wasn't an attacking email, I'd hate to see an actual attack. I love ya, Ron, but I'm really surprised by the tenor of this thread.

This is a legitimate business model used widely on the internet. Scott runs
a popular website that attracts lots of internet traffic on a very specific
subject. Manufacturers get online exposure to their potential customers, in
a form that is much more powerful than simple advertising. The price, as
the manufacturers are well aware, is that Scott gets to keep the products
he evaluates.
The manufacturer doesn't want used stuff back anyway, and they'd rather pay
him with products than pay cash for the advertising. They know he'll sell
it to support his website business. They don't really care about his racing
credentials; they care about the quality of his website, and they want to
see well-written and positive reviews of their products that will bring
them sales. As Luke noted, Scott rides a ton of bikes so he is probably
more of an expert than your average famous racer.
Many of the websites you visit for reviews (of any products) are likely to
be funded this same way.

I've checked out his site in the past. Most recently I was looking for a
winter cx glove. Based on his review I got a pair of Castelli neoprene
gloves. Everything he said I found to be true-hands can get cold and clammy
on long rides which I expected but only need for cx race. Not sure, but I
read a very informative cx training book over the summer by an author with
the same name. Can't confirm if it is the same person.
my two cents,

right on, maria. kind of weird how it went that way. maybe someone should start a website that checks everyone's results before they try to sell something or (god forbid) give an opinion. once again, it's only bikes and racing, folks....
"I am surprised no one is blaming Pres. Obama... yet."
There is already too much to blame on him. (lost)Hope & (no)change.

The guy rides more product then all of you so he has a basis for
comparison. Is he the fastest? No. Are you? No. Do people ask you for
advice? Sure. Thats what people do. Dont be haters because you have to pay
below retail for gear that you take a loss on at the end of the year. And
BTW, I have not crashed on many helmets but I think lazer makes the best.
And as for crotch cream...

the guy races Mstr A's, a respectable catogory. but yeah. ALL gear reviews should be taken with a grain of salt. especially bike gear reviews. what works for a 145-155lbs elite may not work so well for the 175+ Mstr C (probably the fieldthat spends the most money on gear). what's funnier is that the guy wasn't even reviewing gear. he was just selling some wheels and some how incurred a random "angry rant"

I figure pros sell the free stuff they get for free...so that's all fair I guess. Dude has rent due like the rest of us.
However Ron has a point about the reviews. I would compare it to taking parenting advice from a childhood development expert...who has no children. You can read all you can about it, but until you are sleep deprived and remembering to hold the projectile vomiting baby face out. You have to take the advice, and reviews, with a grain of salt.

So dude. Is your gig to get these companies to send you this stuff to review (because you are all-knowing) on the CBR.com website....and then you sell them? If so that seems pretty sketchy coming from someone who is not winning the Crusade, the defunct USGP or other elite races. Maybe these companies think you are the cat’s meow of all things cross.
Can you share with us why we should accept you review of a set of C35 Clinchers for example? Not really trying to attack you, but I would believe what someone like Molly Cameron, Erik Tonkin or Shannon Skerritt told me about wheels before what you told me. Please enlighten us to your world of expertise and forgive me if I question someone who might actually be the “Big Daddy of Cyclocross”. My little brain maybe just did not know your status.
Thanks from all of us in the dark.

Hey every one. The wheels are gone. Thanks.
Hey folks. I need to make room in the garage. I have three sets of carbon wheels I'm selling. One set of all carbon clinchers and two carbon tubulars.
The clinchers-
1.Leo Elements 38mm all carbon clincher. These were made for a Euro company that canceled their order and they wound up in the US. They have the same rim as a Williams carbon clincher. It's 38mm deep and laced up to American Classic designed hubs through bladed spokes. The wheels weigh in at 1500grams with skewers and rim tape. I have about 20 rides on them and they are straight and true. They come with wheel bags, Conti GP3000 tires mounted, skewers, and carbon specific pads and holders. $600 and no shipping costs.
The tubbies-
1. Pro-Lite Gavia 50T. Full carbon 50mm deep tubulars. Pro-Lite makes wheels for Reynolds, FSA, Ritchey and is their house brand. These are stiff and nice riding wheels with only about 5 crits raced on these and never flatted or crashed. They come with wheel bags, skewers, and carbon specific brake pads. $650 and no shipping costs.
2. Planet X 50mm ProCarbon Custom- 50mm deep carbon rims laced via Sapim spokes to American Classic hubs. These were handbuilt LA for Planet X. They come with wheelbags and carbon brakes pads. Never been glued up or ridden. $600 and no shipping costs.
All the wheels are Shimano/Sram compatible.
$1500 takes all three pair.
I have two sets of road wheels for sale. Both have very few miles and are in excellent shape. I can ship them to you or I'll be in Portland for the cross races if you are going to be there. One set is Reynolds Alta Race with a Shimano compatible freehub. They are clinchers with a 30mm section rim and aero spokes. I'll take $125 for the pair. The other set are Vuelta Carbon Pro Tubulars. 50mm depth rim, bladed spokes, Shimano freehub. Has like new Tufo's glued up. Asking $400. My cell is 541-778-4022 and my email is thomkneeland@yahoo.com

I have the following wheels for sale:
Zipp 303 Tubular:
Lightning fast acceleration and superb aerodynamics is a prime feature of
the 303 tubular wheelset. At 280 grams, the 38mm Mid-v is the lightest
production tubular Mid-v rim we know of. They are also more than double the
lateral stiffness and strength of rims weighing 50% more. Refinements to our
ICT carbon manufacturing process have made possible a subtle change in the
rim shape. The change in shape decreases drag an additional 6% at wind
angles of over 15 degrees while also decreasing wind induced side force
7.5%. An important side benefit is a corresponding increase in lateral
stiffness and overall strength. True aerodynamic performance isn't always
about going in a straight line. The 303 wheelset is designed to attack
corners with razor edge precision. The shape and stiffness of the rim allows
the 303 to heel over into and out of the corners like no other aerodynamic
wheelset. By minimizing the pressure differential from one side of the rim
to the other while maximizing head-on aerodynamic performance, the 303 is in
a class all its own. Straight into the wind and at minimal angles a
regenerative airfoil makes the rim appear deeper to the wind than the rims'
actual depth. Multiple patents and unmatched manufacturing prowess make this
aerodynamic technology a ZIPP exclusive. The stainless steel drawn oval
spokes used in the 303 wheelset are the proven best shape for all wind
angles. They provide great aerodynamics, stiffness and strength. Tubular
versions feature our exclusive Silica-Ceramic braking surface for superior
dry and wet weather performance. No special pads are required.
These wheels were ridden approximately 15 times last season for road races
only. They have never been used for training. I am including the Vittoria
Corsa CX tires that are currently on the rims. There are no skewers or
cassette included. The cassette body is Shimano.
Price - 700.00
Mavic Ksyrium SSC SL:
One set of front and rear, brand new, never installed 2003 Mavic Ksyrium SSC
SL road bike wheels with skewers and spoke tools. Mavic's unique Zicral
spokes ensure a strong and light wheelset. The rims, hubs, and spokes are
black. They normally sell for $850. The front wheel weighs approximately 690
grams and is laced with 18 bladed spokes in a radial pattern to a semi-aero
rim. The rear wheel weighs approximately 840 grams and is laced with 20
bladed spokes in a X2 and radial pattern to a semi-aero rim. The freehub
body will work with your Shimano 8 or 9-speed cassette. These wheels have
standard 700C road bike clincher rims.
Price - 575.00
Mavic Ksyrium SSC SL (used):
These are 2002 Ksyriums. Description of the wheels is the same as the ones
above except that they were ridden for 1 season. They are in good condition.

prime feature of the 303 tubular wheelset. At 280 grams, the 38mm Mid-v is the
lightest production tubular Mid-v rim we know of. They are also more than
double the lateral stiffness and strength of rims weighing 50% more.
Refinements to our ICT carbon manufacturing process have made possible a subtle
change in the rim shape. The change in shape decreases drag an additional 6% at
wind angles of over 15 degrees while also decreasing wind induced side force
7.5%. An important side benefit is a corresponding increase in lateral
stiffness and overall strength. True aerodynamic performance isn't always about
going in a straight line. The 303 wheelset is designed to attack corners with
razor edge precision. The shape and stiffness of the rim allows the 303 to heel
over into and out of the corners like no other aerodynamic wheelset. By
minimizing the pressure differential from one side of the rim to the other
while maximizing head-on aerodynamic performance, the 303 is in a class all its
own. Straight into the wind and at minimal angles a regenerative airfoil makes
the rim appear deeper to the wind than the rims' actual depth. Multiple patents
and unmatched manufacturing prowess make this aerodynamic technology a ZIPP
exclusive. The stainless steel drawn oval spokes used in the 303 wheelset are
the proven best shape for all wind angles. They provide great aerodynamics,
stiffness and strength. Tubular versions feature our exclusive Silica-Ceramic
braking surface for superior dry and wet weather performance. No special pads
are required.</span></font></p>

hey there. these wheels are 27" road wheels. the hubs are in decent shape
and the rear is threaded for a freewheel. i envision them being cut out and
built up in 700c or any other configuration you can think. even leaving
them be. they would make a good set for commuting as a single speed or
fixed. they are quick release and i believe them to be of the 105 level.
comes w/ 27" tires in perfect condition. 30 bucks or best offer. i gotta
start covering my entry fees for races somehow.
