Battle at Barlow

One of the best ideas I've seen in years, although maybe it should be top
20 just to rock the boat a little.

The actual winning throw was 22.52m or 73ft 10 3/4in which was a new
Olympic Record!

What does Battle at Barlow have in common with a Gold medal at Rio? A shotput? How is that you ask - A recent graduate from Sam Barlow High, just won a gold medal at Rio in the Shotput. Our Chief Official Sunday (Brian List) informed me that Ryan Crouser won gold throwing a 16lb shotput 21.59 meters (70.8 feet). And with that birthed the idea that the Singlespeed men and 2/3 men could vie for a 'callup' to our race by the furthest shotput throw. Barlow High will be providing a Ryan Replica 12 pounder. Top three get the front line. See you all Sunday! Go do some pullups.

So it turns out that in the 10 years that Battle at Barlow has been around, that we have only had to replace a few railroad ties. This year we replaced three, but it is still a daunting run-up. Come experience the 10th anniversary of this great classic race. On line registration is available through OBRA. More information to follow.

This coming Sunday is the big event before the big event. Come race Barlow, get yourself ready for Cross Crusade. Top placers will get the much desired call ups for the Cross Crusade races in October. We still have the famous run-up, still epic. Go to OBRA and register early, save $5 before the end of this week. Yes!

Hey Ron,

If you just slow down a little when you pass me, I might just say "hello in there".

So, last year it rained. Rained so much the pools of mud at Barlow High School were epic. We only lost one bike. It was found 3 months later when the 11 am archaeological class unearthed it. The course is better than ever and ready for another epic year. We have fully built Specialized Crux on raffle with all proceeds going to Barlow High. We have added a special feature this year for those that want an edge on the large fields - Barlow call ups. The first 20 that preregister at the shop in the larger fields (check the flyer) will get the call up that could make or break their result. For the few of you that have already preregistered on line, just swing by the shop with a printed copy of your preregistration and let a staff member know. Check it out. Look forward to seeing everyone out this year! Please note that the Junior Cyclocross Series is not being held at Barlow this year due to unforeseen change in schedule. It will be back on next year. Good Luck! - Smith and
Nephew p/b WestEnd.

I am up here at Veloce Bikes on Hawthorne. I have been informed that tonight rains should soften the course but expect a lull in the heavy rains in the morning. Preregistration online ends at 3:00 today. If you miss it and want to get into the action tomorrow, we are offering extended prereg until 5:00 pm here at the shop. Swing on by and grab some waterproof gear. On site registration will go until Candi rips the wet paperwork from my hands. Any questions please contact me at schwaebs at earthlink dot net. See you tomorrow! Steve.

A few questions have come up and we would like to let you know; Cross Crusade numbers will work. So will any weekend race numbers. GPET included. If you wear your Blind Date number, you will not get scored properly. There are no call ups for our race, sorry, no bribes allowed. Pre-registration ends at 3pm tomorrow, please sign up soon. I saw blue sky on my way home from work today, should be good come Sunday. Any questions, please email me at schwaebs at earthlink dot net.

...perhaps Battle in the Mud or insert your own metaphor - what ever the case, it will be epic even without the rain. Sokol Blosser has added a a few primes into the mix to make this more interesting! First across the line after the first full lap for the masters A's in the men's and women's field will get a Magnum of Sokol Blosser's stellar '09 Pinot Nior. We have a raffle this year for a Cinelli Zydeco Frame. Swing by the Veloce tent and check it out. All raffle proceeds will go to the Cross Country Team at Barlow High School. More information will follow! Do not forget to preregister.

Its on! Battle of Barlow is better than ever. We have added steps to the most grueling run up this side of the the Mississippi, we have added a few turns, we have cash and wine prizes, and it sounds like we have rain! Sage Cycles will also be available with demo bikes for racing. Come early and secure a spot on one of the 4 cross bikes available. Look for them in the main parking area. We are also allowing this year tents at the start line. Please see our facebook and OBRA info page for more information. Look for "Battle at Barlow Cyclocross Race" under the search engine within Facebook. Preregister online, swing by the shop or wait until the last minute, either way, it is a great race.

Thank you to our sponsors: Veloce Bicycles, Sokol Blosser and of course Sam Barlow High School along with their cross country team for making this event possible.

Any questions please feel free to drop me a line - schwaebs@earthlink.net. See you out there!

This was my first time racing at Barlow. The course provided some really tough challenges yet still allowed me to race to my physical abilities rather than an overly technical course or a course with too much single track without decent passing zones. A few things I noticed that were exceptional about the organization was that there was wholly sufficient course monitors watching for safety concerns and immediately dealing with issues when they arose. The run in towards the finish was the best protected I've seen at any OBRA race so far as a result of plenty of fencing and crossing guards that were constantly on task. I only saw a few small scrapes. It seems like most of the racers were able to complete their day without crashing stories (or crashing souvenirs). It's always awesome to have food vendors on site, to have results posted while still at the race, and to have the general feeling that everything's going correctly and on schedule. Fantastic sized fields. A real class act that
I look forward to next year. Now somebody please just teach me to keep up some speed over that incredibly bumpy grass. Saturdays race at Fanzio Farms also had a lot going for it. I love it when promoters take the time to consider factors for community building. Well done everybody!

They have done a great job every year at Barlow. Great group, great
sponsors and the usual great job by the OBRA officials. I do agree that the
marshal work at the paved blind corner was the best ever. I have had near
misses twice there in the past, but today the marshals gave me the
confidence to take that corner much faster and thus carry much more speed
toward the finish. Almost got Luoma... but old legs just died.
Thanks for a tough and very FUN race. Tonight I really feel like Cross
season has arrived. Rain is just around the corner...marshal or no.

DIRECTIONS TO SAM BARLOW HIGH SCHOOL

From Portland and points north and west:
Take I-84 east (Banfield Expressway) out of town and go to Exit 17. The sign for the exit is "Troutdale". Turn right (south) as you exit. You will be on 257th Avenue which winds up the hill and in front of Mt. Hood Community College. Go about 3 1/2 miles on 257th until you reach Powell Valley Road. Turn left (East) on Powell Valley and go until you reach the Boring-Troutdale Road at the first stop sign -- that is about 2 miles. Make a right turn and then take the first left -- 0.2 miles --onto Lusted Road. You may see a small sign for Sam Barlow High School at this turn. Drive down and up hill for about 1.5 miles until you see Sam Barlow High School on your right. Drive to the stop sign turn right into the parking lot on the side of the school.

From Oregon City and points south:
Take I-205 north to the Estacada Exit -- exit for State Route 212 and 224. Turn right as you exit the Interstate to get onto 212. After about 3 miles the road splits in a "Y", take the left fork to Damascus. Continue on Route 212 through Damascus to Boring (4 miles past Damascus). Leave Route 212 in Boring (by going straight ahead instead of taking the right turn to Sandy) and continue on 282 Avenue (the Boring-Troutdale Road) for the next 3 1/2 miles. You will see a turn to the right on Lusted Road -- and may see a small green sign to Sam Barlow High School. Take the right turn on Lusted Road and continue for 1 mile. You will see the school on your right. You may park in the large parking lots behind and at the side of the school on Lusted, or you may continue to the intersection with 302nd Ave and turn right into the parking lot on the side of the school
