Wow, there were over two tons of Clydesdales at Echo yesterday. They were so
awesome!

Is that some kind of new world's record?

I would assume the weather conditions can be all over the place! Scorching hot! Hot and humid. Frigid cold. Snow (find that trail if you can). At times so windy you ask why did we start this ride? Something in between all those. Or almost perfect like yesterday!
Right?
Also if no others have given them a shout out...........Thanks so much to the people building and maintaining those trails. It takes a great deal of work to do that work and you have done (are doing) well. Be thankful you do not have lots of blow down from big trees..........but that is what makes Echo Red to Red so special. It is such a VISUAL race! You can see forever. Every race has it's own personality. I loved seeing the "Bear", "John Wayne" and Roy Rogers. Maybe next year you can find a cardboard "Red" Skelton and or "Red" Green. Get that Red Green fellow promoted and you might convince a few Maple Leafs to show up. It was neat riding with all the folks from out of state.

Anyone going to Red to Red? Hoping to find a ride with someone, preferably leaving Friday to camp before the race.

Thanks to Brian and his crew (Shane, Ivan and others)....and the town of
Echo and Lloyd and Lois Piercy for the use of the Cattle Ranch and their
hospitality.
Great job volunteers and to all of you who raced it.

As the Rivercity Oregon XC Series race Director It was great to see 324
riders soaking up the 60 degree's of mountain bike trails. The course was
super fun, bumpy, and the mini stunts over barbed wire fences (ramps) and
over canals (bridges) combined with the rolling plains and steep vineyards
made the race a great way to kick off the series for all who attended.
Riders from Washington and Idaho once again mixed it up with Oregon's Best
as the competition in the Pro/cat 1 all fields was fierce.

Results to come on www.oregonxcseries.org

I agree with Nathan.... although my back remembers more bumps. Suspension
probably would be nice. I would NOT race that course on a cross bike unless
I was desperate. I know... I am desperate! :-). I am registered!

Brian just emailed me that there have been NO cows on the trails recently and the track will be smoother than last year. My experience is you can win just about any race in oregon on any off-road bike... There are advantages and drawbacks to every bike on every course!

It's a slightly bumpy, rolling course (outside of the initial roll out/roll-in). I rode a rigid SS last year, only thing I would've done differently is get a suspension fork to smooth out the bumps. Very little level ground (either climbing or descending), no big hits, no insane descents.

Do-able on a cross bike, but I don't know if I'd recommend it, unless you can fit something substantially larger than a 35c tire on. I've ridden a 'cross bike with 35c tires at Scappoose, I'd rather do that than the Red to Red course on one.

I'd say the ideal bike would be a singlespeed (or 1x9) with a 4" travel fork. I'll likely be riding a SS with a rigid fork (since I'm cheap) and big tires below 20 psi.

Check the Echo Red to Red website:

http://www.echoredtored.com/

Click on the "Course Profile" link in the upper right. It's not an
interactive/downloadable map - but it gives you an idea of the course.

Yes, me too.
I am wondering also if anyone has done this on a cyclocross bike (geared or otherwise) and whether you'd do it that way again, if you have. Particularly wondering if there are descentss that would seem kind of doubtful if NOT on a mountain bike

Thanks for all the great insight on the Echo Red to Red course. I
appreciate it and all the diversity when it comes to bike choice. Not sure
what I'll do yet, but I know it's going to be fun getting out on the trails
with everyone and starting another season. See you out there! Thanks - Dan

I raced my Karate Monkey (fully rigid) 29er last year and had a blast! It
is bumpy! I finished less than two minutes down on the winner of my cat...
and I stopped to take off my rain gear and water some sagebrush. I never
thought suspension would have made me any faster. However.....There were
riders who loved their full suspension bikes. What do ya do?
I am going rigid 29er again this year. My goal is to have fun and finish.
See ya there.
