We took our tandem on the train to Seattle a few years ago. They
hassled us a bit, claiming they couldn't take tandems. But eventually,
they wheeled it in and lashed it standing upright in the baggage car.

I would add that tandems are handled inconsistently by Amtrak. They fit
just fine on the rack/hook if you take the front wheel off and they hang
it by the rear wheel. (Velcro strap the front wheel to the bike).

In a single trip we had 4 different train segments. Three of these we
were easily accommodated by hanging the bike as described, smiles
included. Unfortunately it was the first segment in which we were
informed tandems could not be accommodated unless boxed which is an
issue when learning this just moments before departure.

Lastly, always remove panniers, etc before loading.

As I recall it wasn't much additional for the bike ($5 soudns right), but you will have to box it up in order for it to go on the train. Get to the train station early in order to get a box and perform the necessary removal of pedals and turning of handlebars - the boxes are quite large and can fit a bike in this fashion with both wheels still on. One tip I can give is to ask for a used bike box at the counter before purchasing a new one. Also, ask the baggage guy at your destination to hold your bike box for you in the back or you will have to purchase another box to get home!

Hi All
Our tour company work's with Amtrak.
Some of the trains have racks and you do NOT have to box your bike others don't.
The Cascade between Eugene and BC does have limited racks.
The Starlight between Seattle and LA does not have racks.
Have fun...the train is a great way to travel
