I would add that tandems are handled inconsistently by Amtrak. They fit just fine on the rack/hook if you take the front wheel off and they hang it by the rear wheel. (Velcro strap the front wheel to the bike).
In a single trip we had 4 different train segments. Three of these we were easily accommodated by hanging the bike as described, smiles included. Unfortunately it was the first segment in which we were informed tandems could not be accommodated unless boxed which is an issue when learning this just moments before departure.
Lastly, always remove panniers, etc before loading.

Also, ask the baggage guy at your destination to hold your bike box for you in the back or you will have to purchase another box to get home!
