For those interested in technical details, the problem with numbers at the
5/7 PIR was not pinning or placement. The problem was that the camera
needed to be switch from "high light" to "medium" or "low" light setting as
the sun when down and ambient light decreased. Leaving it at "high" caused
the automatic aperture control to open the aperture. The wider aperture
decreased the depth of focus causing the riders on the far side of the road
to be out of focus.
I remember when we picked the finish at PIR by handing out index cards to
volunteers and telling them "Bob picks 1 and 2, Fred picks 2 & 3, etc." We
are dialing in on the number thing, in fact pretty dramatically since we
routinely place riders 20+ deep in the field, way past the point where we
are just getting people who are coasting it. We don't get it perfect, but
it is pretty close.

Since Mike and I were using the high speed I can say this. There was a
problem if you were to far on the outside. I didn't know this until the
fields came by and Mike was already racing. I have not quite mastered the
skill of the finish line camera. I couldn't dial it in and if I tried to,
there would probably be NO results! I will say that numbers were better
than usual. For some reason, some of you are afraid of using too many
safety pins. Don't let those numbers flap!
