We didn't use the time to try to
learn how to fall as we found it was too painful. So the goal was to stay
up. We road mtn bikes on loose dirt to learn how to fall.

I used to play a game with Rutledge, Sylvester and others where the object
was to make the other guy fall or fall trying. Cross training meant
something else then...

When I was racing as a junior we did something similar on a soccer field.
We wore tennis shoes so we could kick the ball. It was very good for
working on bumping somebody and learning how not to fall.
