This was a very good description. Thanks Seth. Please re-post it again 2-3 weeks from now. This would be good educational reading for people who are just starting cross when the Crusade begins.

OBRA gang,

I was asked to post something about passing, so here's a quick guide/reminder on passing etiquette. Cyclocross is all about passing, and a good pass can help everyone have a good day and have fun - a bad pass can ruin a day.

Passee: if you're being passed, hold your line (keep going the direction/line that you are on) and maintain your speed. You are not required to move off your line or to slow down. And actually, moving off your line can cause problems, so just hold your line.

Passer: choose a spot that has enough room to safely pass. Let the person know that you are coming ("on your right" or "two coming on your left"), give enough room both to the side and in front, and pass. You do not get the right of way to the line you want just because you are passing: if someone is on the line you want, you need to move to a different line. It's okay to pass on either side, just call out which side.

Bottom line is to obey the golden rule: pass like you would like to be passed. And don't be that guy who ruins someone else's day.

Hopefully this helps sort out some questions people have had (and doesn't spawn a long, inbox-filling chat response!).

Cheers!
Seth

Account for the fact that holding a line off camber, in mud, or on sand is
imperfect. Don't yell at someone for blowing your pass because they made a
mistake. Apologize if you mess up on either end. Makes a difference (to me
at least).
