Double Cross Update #1 - Flats and Puncturevine

We've got tons of cool things in store for DoubleCross this year, but let's
start by cleaning up some business from last year.

I know there was a huge problem with flats last year (I was really
embarrassed), and we've been working to make sure that doesn't happen
again. I met with Carly Heron from the Soil and Water Conservation
District (and a cross racer) and we have come up with a plan to help
minimize the flats.

After identifying the problem areas, here's our plan.
1. Remove or reroute certain sections of the course away from obvious
problem areas.
2. Clear existing weeds.
3. Mark off some places for everyone to avoid (spectators and pre-riding)
4. Drag some questionable areas with a carpet remnant to collect goatheads.

I know this won't eliminate the chances of a flat entirely (I wish!), but
should avoid a repeat of last year.

Anyone who has ridden a bike east of The Dalles know how awful the
goatheads are. I've attached some brochures about it for your reading
pleasure. The big take-away for me today - if you pull one of the seed
pods (goatheads) from you shoes or tires, don't just throw it down. Make
sure it ends up in a trash can.

Finally, even if you don't come to DoubleCross, you might consider using
Caffelatex, Stan's, TUFO sealant, or the like in your tubulars. The cross
season is long and anything you can do to stretch the life of your tires
(and avoid the tedium of cleaning and re-gluing) is probably worth it. I'm
sure a quick perusal of the Internet will provide you with countless
articles on the use of said sealants and the relative merits of each.

Enough of this stuff! Go to David Douglas and let's get this season
started!

Hope to see you in the Hood!
