Erik!

I get a lot of questions about this- so it's good for the general list too.

You definitely have your daughter off on the right path. Start out
small. As you have probably experienced, you will crash it. Let me
repeat to everyone- you will crash it.

Just as an example- I've had a friend buy a rather expensive unit and
then crash it on the first outing. The unit was shuffled into the
closet never to be seen again.

A good starter model is the Nano QX RTF- anyone can get started on it.
Practice, practice, practice. It's taken 3+ years for me to get to
where I am now.

Once you've practiced with that to the point you are proficient with
it- then and only then would I recommend moving up in size.

A good unit (which is the one that I have) is the Phantom 2 with
H3-3D- or a Phantom 2 Vision+ if you don't have a Go Pro. I use the
H3-3D because I like shooting in 2.7K. If you get the P2 with H3-3D I
consider it mandatory to pick up the iOSD (on screen display) with a
transmitter/receiver/lcd combo. The iOSD displays distance, height,
speed, heading, satellite lock, direction to home and most
importantly- power left. These are very important parameters
especially if you suddenly lose sight in the sun or can't see it.

There are other options out there but I find this to be the easiest to
work with. Most other units you really have to know how to tinker.
(I have to tinker with the bigger units). The P2 combo is also very
transportable and easy to throw in the car. My bigger rigs are just a
PITA to fit in the car (especially my hex).

There's always more to it but this is a good starting point.

That quad copter you have was surprisingly quiet and super stable. I saw
it while in the stands on Saturday.

My 12 year old has a much lesser RC quad copter that she enjoys flying
around. I think she would love to get something like this and mount my
goPro on it. Could you recommend a product for her/us?

Alrighty-

First- Burk Webb and I plan on collaborating on getting a video out
that includes the aerial footage. I took a look at it video from the
air- and it is super super cool. As far as the photos:

I was able to process the photos from Alpenrose Day 1 and Day 2.

Day 1 was the women's race:

http://www.dronescape.tv/p588239541

Day 2 afternoon races:

http://www.dronescape.tv/p740756626

I can also adjust colors on any of the photos.

Big heal up to Shawn from Ruckus!
