"Thereabouts," Australian cycling documentary about two brothers who
re-engage with a sport that had grown stale for them will be shown at
VeloCult on December 6, 2014 at 6:00 PM.

Portland, Ore. (November 25, 2014) – Take unique trip through the
Australian Outback through the eyes of two bothers who rode their bikes
over 1553mi in 12 days in search of new sense of excitement of the sport.
Gus and Lachlan Morton rode their bikes exactly how they wanted to, across
the Australian Outback.

Professional cycling and training can be all about the little details.
Distances, wattages, victories and other measures become overwhelming and
you forget the simple joy of riding a bike. Brothers Gus and Lachlan Morton
(who raced for WorldTour team Garmin-Sharp in 2013-2014) got back to basics
in an attempt to recover the lost magic of the sport. This is their story
about the 1553mi journey from Port Macquarie to Uluru (Australia) in just
twelve days.

They started the trip in their hometown of Port Macquarie, 248mi north of
Sydney, and basically headed directly west through Walcha, Gunnedah, Cobar,
and Broken Hill. They crossed into South Australia and went down to
Peterborough, then Blinman in the Flinders Ranges, up to Marree at the
beginning of the Oodnadatta Track, then to Coober Pedy. They crossed into
the Northern Territory and stopped at Kulgera, then finally made their way
to Yulara and Uluru.

The total distance was about 1864mi of which they rode a little more than
1242mi in 12 days. They had to drive parts of the trip purely because the
distances between settlements out there can be up to 250mi, which is a
little too far to be doing day in, day out. However they did some
back-to-back 180mi plus days at the end of the adventure.

The result was a true adventure. They found and met some of the most
interesting people. The brothers were challenged mentally and physically in
some of the harshest environments across Australia (and the world) and had
a hilarious time doing it all.

This adventure spawned a new sense of excitement in the sport that had
grown old and stale for them. They discovered the bike was an incredibly
diverse tool. One used not only to test yourself against others in
competition or to explore and see the world in a unique way, but one that
can open the minds and hearts of even the most steeled bar flies in the
dustiest, dirtiest pubs halfway
to nowhere.

This was the birth of “Thereabouts”, an idea that is focused on challenging
the conventions, disregarding the rules, forgetting what your friends would
say, ignoring the voice that says you can’t and just going and doing it.
Thereabouts is about changing the way you think about sport. Forget the
superstars and the teams. Engage with people you never would have, push
yourself, test yourself, and all because you want to. It will change you.

ABOUT GUS AND LACHLAN MORTON: Lachlan turned pro with the Garmin-Sharp in
2013 and quickly got into his stride, winning a stage in the Tour of Utah,
leading the race and finishing 14th overall. He took second on day two of
the USA Pro Challenge, wearing yellow for two days en route to fifth in GC.
Netting the best young rider award in both events further underlined his
class.

Older brother Gus competed at a high level with the Australian
Drapac-Porsche team between 2008 and 2010. He became disillusioned and
retired from the sport, but took to cycling again during Lachlan’s
2013/2014 off-season. In 2014, both Gus and Lachlan will be back racing -
together on the UCI Continental Team, Jelly Belly presented by Maxxis. The
team is the longest-running professional bicycle racing team in the United
States.
