Portland Off-Road Cycling Master Plan

Biking families. I would bet that the first bike you got your child (or
will get your upcoming one) is not a $2000 CF road bike! It most likely is
a funky little one that would be great for learning on natural surface bike
paths in the city parks that do not exist because the city spends money
keeping soccer, baseball and other athletic fields in pristine condition
(and sitting unused most of the time) but does virtually nothing for bike
riders. If you want your local park to have a safe place for kids to learn
to ride bikes (without tearing up the groomed fields) either show up and
demand fairness from the department (but be real nice and polite) or be sure
to comment online if possible. Real local access for kids (and adults) to
trail riding is totally a doable thing and will increase kids interest in
this healthy, lifelong activity. Now....ya gotta drive to do that and it is
not right. Tax paying bikin' families deserve infrastructure in place so
they can rip around off pavement and away for those large fossil fuel
monsters. Showing up and commenting makes a huge difference. This may seem
like a baby step compared to something like Sandy Ridge, but if the process
that has started has enough backing from the cycling community (individuals,
organizations, businesses) then the pace of developing LOCAL varied types of
off-road riding experiences will only increase. And we know we are all
wanting that to happen. Thanks for reading.

For those of you interested there are some community events and open houses coming up to present the plan. It's certainly important for cyclists to attend these events because there are sure to be some folks in opposition making their voices heard.
