Kings Valley Prizes

An easier way to even up the cash purse is to just go $500 3-deep for both P/1/2 fields and use and Hopworks sponsored prizes to fill out the minor placings.

There has been lots of discussion lately about the lack of road racing in Oregon. Well folks, this is your chance. For 20 years Scott and Cameron have put on a quality event. They put the racers first as it should be, but they also have shown a tremendous amount of respect for the officials and the volunteers, all working together to make this race special. The only thing they did wrong was that they never let me win. I don't have it in me to compete any more, but I will support this race as best I can (follow car this year). I urge all of OBRA to do the same.

As much as I would love for there to be more women in the sport so we could have equal pay outs and media attention, we just aren't there yet and attendance has to come before the pay out. Instead of pointing at the promoters and pulling out a whole slew of accusations, let's do our part and attend the races we want to support and be supported by. Let's show that women want to race and are serious that we want equal pay, by being there on the start line. It's possible and empowering to do so while still knowing your worth.

We would be more than happy to pay out $1,625 to the men's fields and $5,000 to the women, if a sponsor provides the incremental $3,375.

This is an interesting thing to grill a race director on in light of recent discussions of event contraction and revelations about how much money our race directors are losing to offer is these events.

My question is why do we amateurs expect a "pay out"?

It's 2017. There is no excuse as to why all OBRA events are not equal payout. If bicycle racing and OBRA are able to demonstrate true equality, it will be one of our sports best opportunities to continue growing with younger generations. We must get with the times and be leaders on this.

I raced Kings Valley RR last year and I absolutely plan on racing it this
year. The race was well organized and the promoters put in extra work to
make specialized individual envelopes of prize money, with different female
pro athletes on each one. A small gesture, but none the less a nice one in
support of the women.
While (un)equal payout is one way of seeing it, I think as the promoters
have outlined above, that it is multifaceted and far from black and white.

I never choose my races based on amount of prize money, especially not in
local races. It's a separate discussion, but I don't think there should
even be prize money for the lower categories...we should be racing to race.

Kings Valley has been "sponsored" over its 20 year history by its riders. Women's prize payout is currently 19% of the total payout. We have never had women's participation at 19% of total riders, thus prize $ per rider is higher for female racers at Kings Valley than male. We have long maintained that if any cash sponsor would like to support women's prizes at Kings Valley, we will pledge 100% of any proceeds to the women's fields. Speaking of incremental, we can always use support drivers (we prefer 5 vehicles for our two women's fields, which average about one vehicle for every 10 women) for the race, so if you know anyone that will be near Kings Valley on the second Saturday in April, we provide free entry for a racer, gas $, and a tasty bag lunch for support drivers.
