Wow. That is *really* disappointing.

First we have someone---potentially from the OBRA community---stealing OBRA equipment, and now we have someone---almost definitely from the OBRA community---pulling a shit move like this.

Whoever you are, in each case, you are serious assholes.

To the rest of us: if the person doesn't have the basic decency to come forward and make reparations, we should still take it on ourselves to make it right. I'd personally feel pretty embarrassed to be associated with OBRA if we end up with a reputation for bringing this kind of behavior to someone's door and not taking care of it.

What really needs to happen, is the person(s) who did the damage to come forward (privately is okay), and help with the costs associated.
I'm not sure how to post a photo to this mailing list. But if anyone wants to see the damage, I have pictures I can send you. It is really bad.

Let's not let this discussion go the same way the incident went. Everybody please put the pitchforks and torches down. ;o)

Since the vandalism was a mob effort, no one knows the other contributors before or after their turn, and therefore no one will step up to take full responsibility. The greater OBRA community is stepping up big time, so let's take the high road, get this taken care of in the most positive way we can, then let's all stand together to stop anything like this happening again. Be vigilant and speak up if anyone sees this behavior again.

Mostly, the victim and I have spoken, and he is really touched by the good will of THIS community to make amends.

Thank you everyone for your support!

Billy

Good point, Rick.  While the best resolution is for the person(s) responsible to contact the owner and make things right without resort to the criminal justice system, I have to wonder if the possibility of criminal prosecution may bring people forward.  There were a lot of cell phone cameras in the area all day, maybe those responsible were caught in the background of some action shots.  Or maybe some witnesses with a conscience will come forward to identify some of those responsible.  In any event, I will help with a donation through Bill at Wooden Shoe.  I don't mind at all donating to OBRA, but to donate for this reason is more than a little galling.

I will be passing the hat this weekend to fund a full detail of the car. Look for Billy at the Deschutes Team tent area if you want to contribute. Any moneys in excess of the detail (& a pint or 2) will go to junior development to help get our Oregon based younglings to Reno.

Sorry to hear this happened. If no one steps up and takes accountability
for their actions, I will give some money towards getting the car detailed.

Sorry to hear this happened. Deschutes Brewery is the keystone to the
wonderful course and atmosphere of the two days in Bend. The employees are
what make up Deschutes Brewery. The person(s) responsible would do much
good for all if they step forward and make amends. In my opinion it need
not be public. Just come forward and make it right for the employee and all
the rest who have been impacted by your actions.

DEAR OBRA MEMBERS and CYCLOCROSS COMMUNITY,

The Cyclocross Crusade is founded on the premise that bike racing can bring
together ALL people creating a unique and welcoming community based in fun
and respectful competition.
Most importantly, we are building a special camaraderie that enriches us
all.

However on Sunday, as we reveled in our competitive creativity, a member(s)
of our community failed to uphold this simple, foundational value.

A vehicle that was parked near the PIT was vandalized.
This car is owned by a Deschutes Brewery employee - a person who has worked
tirelessly over the years to support our event.

We ask that the person(s) who vandalized the car come forward, admit to the
act, and make reparations.

Yours,

The Cyclocross Crusade

I saw this fairly early and lectured anyone near there that would listen. If I had any windex, I would have cleaned it up before he ever saw it. (I checked my car, but no luck) Just because someone's actions might seem rude, does not give another the right to deface or vandalize the other person's property. None of the persons involved in the "messaging" knew who's car it was, whether it had been there all night, or if they had permission to be there. Also it could have been a newbie to the sport, who would then be unmotivated to be a part of Cross ever again. Additionally, I didn't think the parking job was so egregious. Stupid, yes, with hundreds of people and bikes passing through the narrow paths he left, but he wasn't blocking anyone in or creating an unsafe condition.

Anyone want to chip in for a clean & detail of this guy's ride?
