Rick,
In case you change your mind about shipping your own bike, check out: http://www.francebikerentals.com
They rent high quality road bikes, do delivery and pickup at various places around France, and know their business.

Also, check out the Vercors area. Fantastic cycling with little traffic. Depending on when you're going, there's a great place to stay called Velo Vercors.

I’m planning a vacation in France.  My plans were to ship my bike to & from France via Bikeflights.com.  On the Bikeflights.com website they state, “When shipping your bike for vacation, your shipment will be classified as ‘Personal Effects’. While transit time will take up to five days, the customs clearance process may take up to two weeks, and even though BikeFlights.com will forward all documentation to customs, they will often ask you to provide that documentation multiple times to make sure you are providing consistent answers.”

A two-week delay in customs would certainly throw a wrench in my plans.  Can anyone offer their experience and recommendations to avoid such shipping and customs delays?

Thank you.
