KVRR prizes

I'll begin by noting that this is quite a spirited discussion thus far. We are sincerely pleased that the race is still relevant in peoples minds. Next I will thank those voices that have defended what Cameron & I have been doing with the race over these many years. I find it noteworthy that the voices of support come from 2 winners of the race (one male and one female), 2 well known promoters of bike races in Oregon, and a few others who have actively helped with the race effort over the years.

Next, some context. Last year the race had its lowest numbers in the 20 year history of the eventlower even than the first year when we only ran four fields. We lost real money. We adjusted the prize list down (significantly) to "right size" it in the event that we experience similar numbers this year. We also made what we think is a very balanced payout between men and women....which was largely facilitated by reducing payouts for all so that we could achieve what we think is equality and still be economically feasible.

Following is a summary of the prize payouts this year:

Pro men I-Ii :. 8 deep paying $100, $60 and $50 to the podium
Women 1-2: 3 deep paying the same as above.

Last year we had 12 women in our 1-2 field. First and foremost, this is a competition, and we simply do not think it is "fair or equal" to pay prizes 8 deep when we expect 12 competitors. Last year we had 46 in our mens 1-2. 8 deep ( we used to go 10) seemed reasonable as did 3 prizes for 12 women. Also note that we have a $20 prize for best cat III, so if a cat III woman wins the race (as happened in 2016) she will receive $120 where the mens winner will receive $100. Also note that we have non cash awards for our top mens and womens races. We spend more on the womens prize than the mens prize.

Womens cat 3-4: We plan to pay 3 deep $30 $20 $10 which is the same as the mens 50+ Numbers last year were similar (26 for the Masters 50 and 20 for the women 3-4)

We know that the above will not be to the liking of everyone. This cannot be helped. Cameron and I seek to put on the best race that we can each year given the constraints to which we are subjected. We have been doing this race for longer than some racers have been alive and it gets more difficult and expensive every year. We hope that people see value in what we do and they show that by coming out and racing on the Second Saturday in April.

Speaking of which, we are very much in need of drivers and Marshals for the race. Remember, that if you provide a person, we comp your entry, pay gas $ for drivers and make them a nice lunch.
