I could understand some sort of tarpitting on Google's side that was
delaying mail; they will definitely do that if you send a reasonable volume
but don't have all the right mail control records (SPF, etc) in place.
However, as Isaac noticed, it appears that most of the delays are between
internal OBRA services - postfix, amavis, mailman, etc. I'm a former Unix
sysadmin; I ran the main UO listserv and mail servers for a period of time,
so I know how frustrating these things can be to operate in a performant
manner.

I certainly appreciate the pro bono work that folks do to keep things
running. We the members rely on the board and ED to direct funds
appropriately. As a member, I will say that I would gladly pay a couple
more bucks a year if it helps us get more of Scott's time and attention.

And Mike - hope to see you at the races again real soon!

Hi OBRA,

In case it's helpful for debugging this - I looked over the headers, e.g.
in Brad's EMail and saw a delay from 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM while the message
was on the OBRA server called "bushtit". I saw similar delays in other
EMails.

I *think* the handoff was from amavisd-new (spam and content filter) to
postfix (mailer), both running on bushtit; so one way or another, probably
an internal queueing issue.

Happy to help if I can.

peace,

Isaac

Yeah that its.

Paying $10 more a year on licensing wouldn't even dent the cost of
migrating 5000+ user accounts, history, settings, website, integration, and
a myriad of other unseen points, to a different platform.

So unless someone is willing to take it on for free, or a seriously reduced
rate I would ask that folks maybe appreciate what we have, instead of
getting grumpy about missing a Tuesday night race.

I always love hearing..."but google does it better". They are an
advertising company that entices people to use their product for free so
they can collect data to sell. And yes I understand I am sending this from
a gmail account.

I just think everything that folks do behind the scene to make OBRA run
smoothly deserve a little more than a "Hey!!...whats up" sort of email.

I simply asked Dave to watch his tone.

Flame on OBRA.

Hi,
The delay was brought up again after Tuesday last week with OBRA. Scott,
who graciously donates his time and does an amazing job, looked into it
again and had this to say:

*... Google has decided our content is suspect for some reason, but I’ve
started a verification process to address that.*

I appreciate you all bringing it up. As a promoter, I need to communicate
with our riders quickly and effectively. Glad this looks like it will be
sorted out so everyone can continue to rely on the listserve.

On a related note, look like the smoke might clear for tonight!

Ah the sense of entitlement of the young.

Have a great day Brad. Hope something really important comes along so you can take your righteous indignation up a notch.

Glad you could practice on a non profit organization with limited funds.

Ok, then I'll politely ask you to stuff it. Absent an official incident
tracking system for the website, the mailing list seemed like a reasonable
place to share my observations. I got completely reasonable responses from
folks that appear to be aware of the problem and are working to resolve it;
they didn't seem to need anyone jumping to their defense.

Anyways, now that someone's said something publicly about it, and the issue
has been acknowledged, maybe people will no longer take it out on the
promoters when the go/no go announcements show up late.

I almost started a thread about this topic the other day. I'm not a tech
guy, so could someone explain if there a good reason why shouldn't switch
the whole OBRA chat to google groups or something similar?
>From my basic understanding it would be
1. more secure
2. more feature rich
3. more user friendly/intuitive
4. better refresh rates / faster / quicker

Last week when Will cancelled Tuesday PIR but the message didn't get to
peoples' inboxes until after the race started is a prime example of
failure. Another is when people spam the group with "hey do you still have
that wheelset available?" without reference to the original post.
Interested in opinions.

What's up with the significant delays in deliveries of messages to the
mailing lists? Folks rely on the lists for timely notifications about race
cancellations and changes to schedules. I'm seeing stuff show up on the
website that doesn't appear in my gmail inbox until at least 5 or 6 hours
later.

Heck, just check the 'Show Original' info in gmail for a recent message -
it was delayed for over 11 hours!

Checking the mail headers shows that it frequently sits in a queue on the
OBRA mail server for several hours after the message has been accepted by
the mailing list, and then takes another few hours to make it back out to
gmail. Sure smells like a configuration or capacity issue to me...
