body{font-family: Geneva,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;font-size:10pt;font-family:arial,sans-serif;background-color:#ffffff;color:black;}p{margin:0px}The N-Gear is at most shops (Sellwood, Cyclepath, RCB-pretty sure).  It worked pretty well for me with a single ring and outer guard.  One or two dropped chains in 2 plus seasons with it.  I think technique is the main part of dropping your chain.  Dropping the bike hard after carrying is a major contributor.  That said, short cage derailleur like Chris says, with a tight chain (in the biggest cog the cage is pulled 45 degrees towards the front of the bike) is the best help.  However I went with the Pauls chainwatcher this year and so far I think it's the best thing going if you run a single chainring.

I have tried all of these and I went to a single chain ring with a guard
both inside and outside that are slightly taller than the chain ring. I have
not thrown my chain since. The key is to use a short cage derailleur and a
chain as short as it will possibly work to avoid too much chain slap.

For me, the material, cost, weight, and looks were all unimportant.
Performance was my concern. I had a serious problem with the chain jumping
off either side of the front chain ring. I had the Jump Stop on the inside
and a chain ring guard on the outside and was still losing the chain at
least once a day. I tried adjusting and bending both guards multiple ways
with little improvement.
The Rohloff greatly reduced the problem. I am pretty sure if I had tried
the Third Eye thingy I would have had the same issues as the Jump Stop
because it did not go over and down the other side of the chain ring.
Maybe it's my bike(spot 1x9) or riding style but I would choose between the

Paul, Rohloff, or any other unit that has similar characteristics.

These metal ones look real nice, and while the idea of spending $50 on
a new front derailler that doesn't move (like many that you can freeze
up) - The third eye is still pretty great...esp for $10.

To each their own, but plastic being hit by my chain sounds much more
appealing than metal-on-metal contact.

That Paul one looks pretty good.
The "jump stop" came stock on my 1x9 set-up, and it was no good.
I got the Rohloff one and it is pretty good
http://www.rohloff.de/en/products/speedhub/chain_guide_cc/
Weighs 7 grams more that the Paul one but might be tougher.

Who (in town) has the Pure Sweet Hell DVD? Webcyclery wants $16.19 to ship a DVD!? For that much, I want it delivered by singing telegram!
BTW, we have the Jump Stops and (in my opinion) they are the best such device made. When installed properly, they absolutely positively end chain drop on the inside front ring. They are challenging to mount on some carbon frames though.
