Hello HS coaches,

This is Dave MacFarlane from Roseburg HS and we have had some break throughs down here that I wanted to share with the rest of you.
We already have a cycling program through the school called Step-up to help at-risk students stay in school and last Monday received
an award from the Governor honoring the program for it's encouragement of physical fitness. At the beginning of the cyclocross season
we made plans to participate as a HS team, but when the school Adm. found out that we were taking students out of town to race on the weekends,
they were a little taken back and put a halt to it. I talked to John Wilson about this and he said that no other HS team was experiencing any problems
so there was no track record as to what to do. So I actually went over the HS adm. heads and talked directly to the district superintendent and he
was very supportive over getting something worked out. After many meetings, it was decided that the race team had to be an after school club sport like bowling, lacrosse, etc.
So we made an application and we officially are now a club sport at the school that is open to all students not just the step-up kids (we are now up to 10 racers)
We still have the hassle of setting up our own account and tax ID, but we are getting that done too. The local cycling club Umpqua Velo is donating a matching gift
of up to $1400 to get us some new bikes too, as we do not have enough bikes for all 10 racers at the moment. I knew there would be barriers this season in cyclocross,
I just didn't know that the hardest ones would be off the course.
