Thanks

Mark Ginsberg

We need your help for Rose Pedal Books & Bikes Neighborhood Rides. The

City of Portland Transportation Options has teamed up with Multnomah

County Libraries and Rose Pedal to put together 16 rides on July 26th and

a great prize drawing.

See below for the volunteer jobs needed - Ride Leaders, Ride Assistants,

Ride Sweeps.

Rose Pedal Books & Bikes Neighborhood Rides

July 26, Saturday morning from 10am to noon. For those new to Books &

Bikes, we will have escorted rides that start and end at all Multnomah

County Libraries except Hillsdale. We are al so doing a raffle so that

every time a person rides their bike to their library during Rose Pedal

(July 12 to August 10) they are entered into a drawing for fabulous

prizes.

I have a list of the libraries below and a map to help you locate them. We

need one more volunteer for the following libraries. Please pick a

library.

Libraries: Belmont, Capitol Hill, Fairview-Columbia, Midland, North

Portland, Rockwood.

Volunteer Jobs

* General - We want to demonstrate to people that bicycling is simple:

you don't need special clothing and you don't need to be a super fit

racer. Having ride leaders wear normal work clothing demonstrates that all

you need to do is get on a bicycle to make your trip; you don't have to

change.

* Ride Leaders arrive 5 minutes early to review route and help check

tires, bicy cle safety, and helmets and help circulate the sign in waiver.

Ride in the front of the ride - keep the group moving at a moderate pace.

Obey all the rules of the road. Help point out things along the route of

interest. Exude confidence and riding skill. Also ride leaders and/or ride

assistants and/or ride sweeps will do a short introduction and safety talk

before the ride begins.

* Ride Assistants - Ride Assistants arrive 5 minutes early to review

route and help check tires, bicycle safety, and helmets and help circulate

the sign in waiver. Ride in the middle of the ride - keep the group moving

at a reasonable pace. Also, the ride assistant becomes the sweep when the

ride sweep is busy fixing a flat or attending to a cyclist. The Ride

Assistant also may be call upon to help fix a flat tire. Obey all the

rules of the road. Help point out things along the route of interest.

Exu de confidence and riding skill. Also ride leaders and/or ride

assistants and/or ride sweeps will do a short introduction and safety talk

before the ride begins.

* Ride Sweeps - Ride Sweeps arrive 5 minutes early to review route and

help check tires, bicycle safety, and helmets and help circulate the sign

in waiver. Ride at the end of the ride - keep the group moving at a

reasonable pace. We don't leave any rider behind. Also, the ride sweep has

the cell phone and first aid kit for the people and for the bikes. We have

only had a few flats over the years but knowing how to fix a flat is a

good skill for the ride sweep. Obey all the rules of the road. Help point

out things along the route of interest. Exude confidence and riding skill.

Also ride leaders and/or ride assistants and/or ride sweeps will do a

short introduction and safety talk before the ride begins.

Please don't hesitate to call or email me with any questions you have

about volunteering. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you out

on your bike this summer.
