International Competition set for Alpenrose

Alpenrose Challenge Schedule for July 18-20, 2003.

Alpenrose Challenge will be held on the Alpenrose Velodrome located at the

Alpenrose Dairy complex located 6149 SW Shattuck Road, Portland, Oregon.

PORTLAND, OREGON ? July 10, 2003 ? Olympic Gold Medallist, Marty Nothstein

will be competing at the fifth annual Alpenrose Challenge, July 18-20.

Marty will be joining USA World Team members Jame Carney and Stephen Alfred

and racers from all over the world at the Alpenrose Velodrome. Back again

this year is Australian fast guy Jeff Hopkins.

Current New Zealand national Madison champion, 18-year-old Adam Curry, will

also be racing. Curry came to Portland several weeks ago to experience

racing in the US. He started by winning the Alpenrose Six Day partnered

with local racer Peter Drake. He has raced nearly every day since getting

off the airplane, winning or placing well each time. He is currently racing

at the Cascade Classic stage race in Bend and will return to compete against

other elite level international riders at the Alpenrose Challenge.

Jeremy Vanschoonhoven, Multiple National Trials Champion will be doing

demonstrations of trials riding. This involves riding the bicycle of

obstacles, jumping off and on to high objects. Jeremy is a true showman and

he promises to keep the crowd entertained.

Unlike most bicycle racing, Velodrome racing is a spectator sport. The

Velodrome is a stadium type venue that allows you to see the entire course

of the race. Here in Portland we have a tradition of fast, exciting track

racing at Alpenrose which is one of the steepest tracks in North America

with it?s 43 degree banking and fast drop-offs in the turns. Track racers

fly around the Velodrome on bikes with one gear and no brakes at speeds of

40 mph plus. They seem to defy gravity as they ride the steep banking,

which is as high as a two-story building at the rail. Each race is short

and the action is fast and furious.

Along with three action packed days of racing, the Alpenrose Challenge will

also be hosting exhibitors. Spectators will be able to check out what's new

in the bicycle industry, purchase cycling apparel from and accessories from

Team Sales Cycling, Planet Bike and other vendors. Food and drinks will be

available. The racing begins at 10:00 am for the morning sessions and at

4:00 for the evening session both Saturday and Sunday. There will also be

timed event racing on Friday, at 10 am and 5:00 pm for the fanatical bike

race spectator. As always, admission is absolutely free!
