Candi Murray/Oregon Bicycle Racing Assn
Volunteers and/or Spectators
We do have a couple of volunteer position upcoming. They would be at the
Alpenrose Challenge July 18, 19 & 20 in Portland. Would any of those dates
work for you? These races are both high profile and will put you up close
and personal with many athletes from around the nation and the world. The
Challenge is expecting 2 time Gold medalist Marty Nothstein, Worlds Team
Members Stephen Alfred and Jame Carney, Australian Jeff Hopkins and New
Zealand National Champion Adam Curry and many more. Postions include
holders for the riders, marshalls for egress from the velodrome and many
more. Even if you cannot come out and help at the Challenge , please put
this event on your schedule. It is very spectator friendly and we work very
hard to draw a crowd. Last year we have between 1000 and 4000 at all the
events. The AVC was listed in Fridays A&E section of the Oregonian as a
must do event and WB32 has been running ads for the last 3 weeks.
Unlike most bicycle racing, Velodrome racing is a spectator sport. The
Velodrome is a stadium type venue that allows you to see the entire course
of the race. Here in Portland we have a tradition of fast, exciting track
racing at Alpenrose which is one of the steepest tracks in North America
with it?s 46 degree banking and fast drop-offs in the turns. Track racers
fly around the Velodrome on bikes with one gear and no brakes at speeds of
40 mph plus. They seem to defy gravity as they ride the steep banking,
which is as high as a two-story building at the rail. Each race is short
and the action is fast and furious.
Along with three action packed days of racing, the Alpenrose Challenge will
also be hosting exhibitors. Spectators will be able to check out what's new
in the bicycle industry, purchase cycling apparel, and EAT lots and lots of
food! The racing begins at 10:00 am for the morning sessions and at 4:00
for the evening session both Saturday and Sunday. There will also be timed
event racing on Friday, at 10 am and 5:00 pm for the fanatical bike race
spectator. As always, admission is absolutely free!
