Tom, I haven't carried a patch kit for about 20 years. I carry 2 tubes and a spare folder and just about never need them!

Who wants to sit on the side of the road with wet, frozen fingers and try to patch a tire? Forget it!

Went out tonight for the first time since the storm blew in. I was cover in the black gooey road grime. That sandy crap that gets into everything. It took my 20 minutes to clean the shower after I was done. Yeah, get good tires, and FULL fenders! If I had ridden to work and walked in that slimy, my boss would have shot me. Full Fenders would have helped.

And don't forget the patch kit. I convinced that you only get flats when you leave it at home, or at least that is my experience.

Going to open up the discussion here regarding the state of the very roads we commute and train on.

I went out in my car this weekend and surveyed my usual training routes and 90% of them have the bike

lane or shoulder area where we travel completely covered in that dreaded gravel. I have heard that the city plans to

have it all swept up in time but if it does not interfere with motor vehicle traffic and only endangers cyclists in

their little bike lanes they might not make it a priority. I wonder...will the 13 or so mile stretch of Marine drive even be considered?

Will all of Rt 30 to St Helens get a sweep?

I have only been living in Portland since 98 and riding a bike less than that so I don't know what it was like the

last time we had the snow and ice and gravel. (Was there a last time) How long did it take them to get it cleaned up or

was it just a matter of many trashed tires and rain washing it away. Also...is there a way we could all write letters or make

phone calls to the city to get our bike lanes and shoulders cleared up. Of course I could be acting too soon and should just cut our wonderful

city some slack and give them at least a few weeks to get organized and get it cleared up.

    Thanks All,

    Keith Prior
