FWD: crash

Kallen Dewey

2006-05-22

I was involved in the crash with the Cat 4. women's field at the swan island crit sunday andd I want to thank the people who quickly responded to the crash.
The flying through the air was great, but the landing was bad so I was spitting blood at the time and was in shock, so I don't even know who it was that was first at my side asking me who they should get. These people were by our side very quickly. I guess they didn't belive me when i kept saying that I was fine and it only looked bad. Soon after I was at the hospital, scaring the people in the emergency room with my blood spattered race jeresy complete with numbers.
I ended up with a fine skull fracture, broken arm and many stitches in my face, but it could have been worse. The help of those people at the race who were the first there, asking me questions and slowing the rest of the field down were a great help and I want to really thank you on behalf of me and my family.

Here are the details on the crash. I tried sending this

message to Bill via the web link but it must not have gone

through. In summary, we need to point out potholes or

people will get hurt like some of us did last week. I had

planned a different ride for Saturday, but I will come out

with the team to help give the safety message and to point

out what happened.

Those of us who turned around at the top of Clapshaw were

riding back through North Plains. I was in the second row.

The two riders at the front failed to call out or point to a

pothole (small manhole recessed a few inches below the road

surface). One rider also had no mudflap. Before I knew

that I hit the hole, I was sliding on the pavement.   Jim

Moore (light blue Surly) and Tim (don't know his last name,

gray Nishiki fixed gear) ran me over and they both fell. We

all huddled up and decided to send most riders to get a car.

Those of us who fell and one other rider waited for a ride.

Thanks to Mark Steeger for driving us home.

Injuries: I took Jim Moore to St Vincent for an xray. His

shoulder and collarbone are bruised but not broken. Tim's

back was sore immediately after the crash. I have 2 road

rash spots and 3 bruised areas.

Equipment damage: Tim's frame and helmet are broken. My

bike is cosmetically thrashed but it works.

Regards,

Matt Brownfield
