I would be happy to donate to avoid having to bring extra wheels and look

for them at the end of a race.

sounds good to me. Maybe next year the OBRA fee could just be raised a

dollar to cover it and decicate it to the program.

Subject: [OBRA Chat] OBRA starts New Wheel Program

Every year we ask members to come up with ideas on how we can make racing in

Oregon better. In 2002 we came up with the idea of doing away with the free

newspaper and instead have been combining race flyers and mailing them

direct to members. I just got mine Monday and how nice it is to have 8

races on 1 piece of paper - thanks to Ed Garfield for coming up with this

one.

Last year an idea was proposed by Brad Ross. Why doesn't OBRA buy wheels and

they can be used at road events as neutral wheels instead of soliciting

riders to donate to the cause. So we bought 15 sets of Mavic wheels. Yes

30 wheels total. Roger Banvard of Newport volunteered to true them, check

for defects and keep them in good condition. They are available to all road

races. The problem is that we have not come up with a clear cut way to

reimburse OBRA for the expense - a way for the program to pay for itself.

Earlier this month I propposed to the board that we come up with a fee

structure to pay for them. Like have the race organizer come up with an

extra $100-$200 to cover the costs. Well it is a new program and most of

the race organizers cannot come up with that out of their meager budgets. So

now I have another proposal.

Why don't we set out a jar for donations. If each rider put in $1 that

would more then cover the program and give Roger gas money back and forth

from Newport. So what do you all think? Is putting $1 in the kitty worth

not donating your wheels each week?
