Randy & other promoters, racers, etc...
Personally from a racing standpoint it is better to know before I show up
what the event is going to offer as a course and classes. Although I may
only do 2-3 OBRA mtb races this year I would rather race every time in the
expert/elite class as it is better competition for me. Having the SS class
do the expert class course is a way to see how I compare and still benefit
from prizes, personally I still consider the race against guys like Erik
Tonkin and Barry Wicks versus my fellow SS'ers it pushes me further and
harder. But if I show up and 1/2 or more SS riders don't want to do the
miles or time on the bike the I would race expert/elite anywase. So don't
change it on my account.
Personally I think most of the races in Oregon are to short these days
even
in the expert/elite category and that is the main reason I have not done
to
many over the past few years. I can go to the Shasta Lemurian and get a
30+
mile, 3+ mtb race in and place in the top 20 overall, top 3 ss and that is
what I consider a race. Sea Otter also offers a 2 1/2-3 hour race for the
top guys on a 36 mile course.
Oregon has allot of strong mountain bike racers and they could do the
distance and time on the bike. The past few races I have done have been
less
then 2 hours ride time, 4+ hours drive time, and 2+ hours of hanging
around,
to me it is hardly worth my time and money to do. Considering I can go out
and do a 50 mile mtb ride with a few friends at close to race pace and be
out there for 5 hours riding awesome singletrack having a real fun time.
I know from experience that promoting races is not cheap and I am not
advocating promoters reduce the prices. It is also hard to get volunteers
to
cover long courses, hard to mark long courses, etc... I promoted the
Cascade
Cream Puff for 4 years before calling it good. You have little time to
ride
your bike and most of your work goes unappreciated by the racers
themselves.
There is a certain pride in putting on a good event though and with that
comes racers and success with said events. This year I am promoting The
Summer Ride Fest Mtb bike festival, 8 time trials and 4-6 Cyclecross
races.
I do my best to give all the riders what they want and I know other
promoters do the same. I am but a small fish in a large pond who loves to
ride his bike anytime and anywhere as long as it remains FUN.
Time to Ride,

Hello All SS Racers
As far as the "Oregon Mt Bike Series" goes...if you meet before the race
and
a majority of you agree...it is all good with me...you guys are a pretty
tight group...also I added a women SS class this year, because I was told
there would some women SS racers in 2004...they MIGHT want to still do
Sport
You really should let all the promoters know, because they are use to you
guys racing Sport.
Please keep me posted.
Take Care
Randy

I am all for racing the longer and harder courses.
If the promoter has the
SS field with the sport riders or on the same course I race in the
Elite/Expert field. With race times of 1-1 1/2 hours for $25-$35 it is
hard to justify going to the events. If I go I want the time on the
bike.
