cycling drug scandal, was found dead in a hotel room here Saturday, Italian news reports said. He was 34.A report on the

Web site of the newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport quoted local police officials, and The Associated Press said that a man

who answered Pantani's manager's phone said that the reports of Pantani's death were true. The cause of death was still

unknown early Sunday.

Pantani's half-naked body was found on the floor near his bed in The Roses hotel on the Adriatic coast, the ANSA news

agency reported.

There was no answer at Pantani's Mercatone Uno team or his management agency Saturday.

Nicknamed the Pirate because he wore earrings and colorful headbands, Pantani won the Tour of Italy and the Tour de

France in 1998 with his longtime team, Mercatone Uno.

But in 1999 Pantani was thrown out of the Tour of Italy while leading the race when he failed a test for hematocrit - an

indicator, though not proof, of the use of performance-enhancing drugs. He was also barred in 2002 for using insulin

during the previous year's Tour of Italy, part of an eight-month suspension.

Pantani, who made an emotional comeback to cycling last year after years of wrangling with cycling authorities over

accusations that he was using illegal drugs, had not competed regularly on the professional circuit for the past two

years. He did, however, compete in last year's Tour of Italy, finishing 14th.

Last July, he was admitted to a clinic specializing in nervous disorders, drug addiction and alcoholism.

On Saturday, staff at his hotel said that Pantani checked into the hotel alone several days ago. A hotel porter raised

the alarm about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday after Pantani failed to appear. Hotel staff members knocked on his door, which was

locked. When they finally entered the room, Pantani was found dead on his back, ANSA reported.

Pantani was a hugely popular figure in Italy, especially after becoming the first Italian in 33 years to win the Tour de

France. He was a renowned climber who often sprinted away from competitors while racing up steep mountain passes.

He turned professional in 1992 and eventually won eight Tour de France stages and eight Tour of Italy stages. He wore

the yellow jersey as the Tour de France leader in six stages and donned the Tour of Italy's pink jersey 14 times.

Pantani registered 36 victories over all, the first in a 1994 Tour of Italy stage and the last in the 2000 Tour de

France, when he rode wheel-to-wheel with Lance Armstrong.

After a successful career throughout much of the 1990's as one of the best climbers in the peloton, his career hit the

skids in the wake of the tough anti-doping laws introduced in Italy after the Tour of Italy in 1999, when he was

targeted in a police swoop on riders' hotels.

A year later, Pantani returned to compete in the Tour de France, where he scored his last major victory, on the stage to

Courchevel.
